Rumour: Silicon Knights lays off 75% of Staff

4.5
Too Human developer Silicon Knights has cut its workforce from 97 to 25 employees, according to sources reportedly close to the Ontario-based studio.

"Silicon Knights has had massive layoffs,” 1UP was informed. “They are now down to a core staff of 25 people." Another source added: "It may interest you to note that SK laid off all but 25 employees today." The exact nature of the layoffs was not reported, and Silicon Knights has not officially confirmed the cuts, but it is alleged that those affected include studio president Denis Dyack’s wife Joanne, the firm’s director of human resources.

If true, the news comes as something of a surprise. In July, Silicon Knights received CDN$3 million in provincial funding from the Ontario government, which was earmarked to grow its staff count from 97 to 177 employees.

Alongside a further CDN$35 million invested in the studio over the past five years, the money was also supposed to help fund work on a new 3D game development engine, which was billed as a way to help the firm "develop the next generation of gaming systems and become a self-sustainable, self-publishing company”.
