No shock as Online Pass confirmed for Battlefield 3

4.2
Battlefield 3 will ship with an Online Pass code in the box that will be needed to access the game’s expansive multiplayer features.

The news was confirmed by DICE designer Alan Kertz on Twitter. When pressed on the reasons for the decision, he said that the decision to use the system was “because servers cost money, and used games don't make developers any money”.

Those who buy a pre-owned version of the game will be able to buy an Online Pass for around £8.

Its predecessor, Battlefield: Bad Company 2, included a VIP pass that could be redeemed to access additional content on the game disc that was otherwise locked.

The last high-profile EA release to not include an Online Pass was Portal 2, and before that Crysis 2. But these games were published under the EA Partners label, meaning their developers were free to opt-in or opt-out of the scheme.

Why are people still under the false assumption that whatever developers make they keep? Do you keep every cent you make from your job? They have bills to pay just like the rest of us. There are publishing fees, resource fees, server fees, facility costs (heat, electricity, etc), as well as payment for all their employees and their work perks. They aren't being greedy, they are doing what every company does: Trying to get as much profit over cost as possible. Besides that, if you enjoy the games that they make then why b*tch over this? Shouldn't you want to support the people that make the things you enjoy?

P.S. For a while this game used will only be about $50 anyway, so if you add the $8 for the pass you're still basically paying retail price.

if you do not like it then they can just go to paying for a monthly service fee like xbox live. the only reason why developers do not do this on xbox is because you already pay a monthly fee, which some of that is given to the developers and they do not need to charge a fee. just deal with it and quit the bitching. this means it will make sure the quality of the game is at it prime 24/7

SPEED It's funny how everyone is making it sound like they're greedy for doing this. Servers cost money, and they aren't cheap. Take it from someone who provided a free service for months before I even started breaking even. Used games don't send any money back to the producer. So unless you want shitty connections, or frequently changing hosts like in CoD, buy the full game or quit ****. The pass is free with a new copy of the game which most of you will buy anyways.

They made more than 1B dollars in one week if they release the game....

1B dollars? I think that will last server for 8593459834 years!

I believe they will decrease the money and copies just because of that.
Dude your stupid, they have to pay bills, not only for their Facility but for their workers their jobs, health insurance, and they constantly upgrade their equipment. you may have 1b dollars but not for long because at EA they arent greedy they take your money and upgrade their equipment to make your gaming experience better. Learn about life, Nuff said.

*laughing*

If they have 1B dollars in their bank.

Then they will make about (Any percent may be vary) around 650k dollars per min...

you sound like a 4 years old.. just saying

I'm sorry, I think that's little too much..

I'll say around 15k dollars per min....

That right, PER MINUTES!!! I think it's enough for infinite years.

TacoElite Just a scam to make more money. Needing to pay for for server space. lol. So if there is 100 BF3's and someone sells it to another person, its still one copy and one player. Not like there will be 101 people playing instead of the original 100.

Don't leave school yet your punctuation Is terrible besides It was CoD that started the whole lets charge extortionate prices. If you knew how server backbones worked you wouldn't think it's a problem granted they get nothing from pre-owned games, what makes it worse is that all stores pay peanuts which they turn and sell It for four times the profit.

The only ones I can see crying about it are those that can't afford it for example a lot of pre-owned games are resold at about 90% of its price for a new game.

To finish off the game is worth it having played both the Alpha and Beta builds the whole time they were active on pc.

Lol, you do realize that you can only have a capital letter after a period unless it's an I, right? Maybe you should get some punctuation before trolling someone else.

I hate to post another comment when I should have added it on my last one :P

But being myself a person with a flashed xbox and I burn my games. (Or used to at least. Don't play much anymore.) Homefront was a big pain in the ass for me. So it's obvious why they're doing it and I think it's good. It will bring more profit to the companies by charging the fee for the pass for pre-owned games, and for charging it on burned copies, or completely eliminating them. Either way it's a good thing to do. (:

Why does everyone always have to start off a reply with an insult?

And for the record, his punctuation wasn't terrible. It's better than most people. At least it's readable.(:
