PS5 Backward Compatibility Testing Is Making Good Progress, Says CEO

4.2
Though the PS5’s backward compatibility isn’t going to be on the same level as the Xbox Series X – which will be able play games from all generations of Xbox – Sony have promised that their next-gen console will be able to play PS4 games. These games will also receive enhancements at a system level, which means that each game has to be tested for the PS5 individually.

Speaking in a recent interview with CNET, PlayStation CEO Jim Ryan gave an update on how that process coming along. Ryan said that Sony are still in the process of working with publishers and developers of testing the over 4000 games in the PS4’s library, and that so far, Sony are happy with the progress that’s being made.

“We said that the PS5 has been designed to play PS4 games,” Ryan said. “We’re going through the process with the publishers and developers testing that rather exhaustive library of over 4,000 games. We’re happy with the progress that’s been made.”

Sony have previously said that at launch, the PS5 will be able to play the vast majority of the games in the PS4’s library, so here’s hoping this process will keep moving at a good pace until then. The new console is expected to release this holiday.

Great to hear, I wonder how long it will take them to test 4000 games...

That's good, it's looking positive.

I'm def in for a PS5 if they get that backward compatibility for the PS4 library sorted

At least they're happy with the progress they're making.

ifconfig I think the fact Xbox has backwards compatibility on all generation games, that's the only thing that beats PlayStation.

Also better hardware and server stability. I also think their multiplayer is better, too in general. However, Microsoft says they are waiting to unveil the new exclusives for this Gen. Claiming they know they messed up on it last time and plan on blowing us out of the water. I think Phil said something like, but not exactly, "We have more exclusives than we know what to do with"

If all that remains true, which only the exclusives part is a mystery right now, price will be a big factor. I can see Xbox cutting price just enough to beat Playstation at launch for more purchases.
