Nintendo investigating reports of unauthorized account access

3.8
You may wish to enable two-step verification for your Nintendo Account due to recent reports of unauthorized account access.

Multiple reports have surfaced with Switch owners stating their Nintendo Accounts have been accessed without their authorization.

Yesterday, there were reports of Switch owners having their accounts showing unauthorized purchases or access.

While Nintendo has yet to confirm such accounts by users, but today, it released a statement to Eurogamer saying it was “aware of reports of unauthorized access” to some Nintendo Accounts and it was investigating the matter.

To be safe, Nintendo has recommended all account holders enable two-step verification for their Nintendo Account. The company also said if you become aware of any unauthorized activity, you should take the steps outlined here or contact Nintendo for general support.

These new reports come just a couple of weeks after Nintendo Japan said third-party logins had accessed data (thanks, GI.biz).

Maybe if they were smart enough to have it in the first place this wouldn't have happened.

They should've had two step verification in the first place.

Forest So this was more than likely due to a leak of 3ds/WiiU accounts that were tied to nintendo accounts. You had to physically be on one of those devices to change the password to that account, which why when people were changing their nintendo account password they were still getting unauthorized logins.

The affected accounts all had their NNID (the previous system for the 3DS and Wii U) linked to their Nintendo account, and it was this information that was accessed without permission.

Logging in with an NNID has now been disabled, and affected accounts will have their password reset.

The cases of people having their PayPal accounts accessed and used occurred because people had set the same password for their NNID and Nintendo Account.

Approximately 160,000 accounts may be affected, including a user's nickname, date of birth, gender, country and email address.

I'm guessing that is one of the main reasons my account didn't get accessed. When the switch came out I made a fresh new account so I had no past. Don't remember why I did but I guess it worked out for the best.

That's one of the reasons you should add F2A to your accounts otherwise you will get unauthorised account access time-to-time. It's great to see Nintendo to investigate in this huge error.

I'm glad they're investigating but if everyone would set up extra security and use generated passwords that would increase the chances of being safe.

Always smart to keep your accounts secure. As far as I know my nintendo account didn't get logged into by anyone else so I'm glad to be on the safe side.
