PS5 will play ‘almost all of the top 100 PS4 games’ at launch

Mark Cerny, lead system architect for the console, announced new details about PS5 backwards compatibility support on Wednesday.

“Backwards compatibility was handled masterfully by AMD,” he said during a PS5 video reveal which you can rewatch in full below. “They treated it as a key need throughout the design process.”

Cerny later added: “Running PS4 and PS4 titles at boosted frequencies has also added complexity. The boost is truly massive this time around and some game code just can’t handle it. Testing has to be done on a title by title basis.

“Results are excellent though. We recently took a look at the top 100 PlayStation 4 titles as ranked by play time and we’re expecting almost all of them to be playable at launch on PlayStation 5.”

Sony also revealed the official PlayStation 5 hardware specifications on Wednesday, and confirmed new features related to expandable storage and 3D audio.

It was reported in February that Sony is struggling to determine the PlayStation 5 price due to a shortage of components resulting in increased manufacturing costs.

Once they make the system fully backwards compatible I'll be impressed. it's hard to do but it definitely should be doable for them.

Gossip Definitely a step in the right direction but they need to make the system fully backwards compatible.

I think I read in another article that the reason it's not going to be fully backwards compatible is because the PS5 is going to be too fast to play some older games.. Which does kinda make sense because some of the older PS3 games even run like shit on my PS4 Pro.

That's absolutely ignorant. They could admit their not tech savvy. Microsoft got a lot to offer in backwards compatibility, as SHOULD Sony. Microsoft is gonna have it in the bag with price and content.
