Stadia Subscribers Disappointed with Lack of New Titles

3.6
Following its launch last November, Stadia users are starting to become annoyed with the lack of new games on the platform.

Google’s Stadia game streaming service launched on November 19, 2019, with 22 games available and many more promised. Although many early adopters of Stadia subscribed because they believe in a game streaming future and wish to experience triple-A games on all devices, Stadia’s lack of new titles is concerning. Users on Reddit have pointed out that Stadia has gone over 40 days without a new game release. Obviously Stadia’s employees deserve a holiday break; however, after promising 120 new games on the platform in 2020, Stadia isn’t off to the best start.

Furthermore, over half a dozen of the 42 games listed on Stadia’s “games” page are unreleased. These titles include Cyberpunk 2077, Doom Eternal, Baldur’s Gate 3, and Orcs Must Die 3, to name a few. Although many of the unreleased titles featured look to be exceptional games, it’s difficult to foresee how Google will pull 120 new games to the platform. In their New Year’s update on January 16 the Stadia team wrote:

“We have a lot more planned and will continue to work hard toward delighting gamers with our vision for Stadia. Looking at our upcoming lineup, we are tracking more than 120 games coming to Stadia in 2020, and are targeting more than ten games in the first half of this year alone that will be only available on Stadia when they launch. We’re working with our partners to share more on those games soon.”

Notice that in the second sentence they also mention bringing 10 Stadia timed-exclusives before July. Although I’m fully supportive of an all-digital streaming future, it’s hard not to worry about Stadia. Along with a lack of new games, early adopters seeing their subscriptions coming to an end will certainly be hesitant about renewing. After all, the first big Stadia game to launch this year–Doom Eternal–doesn’t release until March 20.

To make matters worse, Stadia is still missing many features that contemporary platforms like Steam have perfected. Additionally, many Stadia users have cited issues such as a wonky 4k resolution, and network errors over LTE. As we enter the fourth month of Stadia’s launch, it’s becoming increasingly clear that it is an early access product. Regardless, I hope Stadia surprises us all soon with new game announcements, and whenever they do you can be sure we will have all the details for you.
