2020 should ultimately be a big year for Sony. Big exclusives like The Last of Us Part II and Ghost of Tsushima are coming out for PS4 this Summer and the PS5 is poised to launch in the fall. Despite this, Sony confirmed to GamesIndustry.biz that that would not be attending E3 this year.
Sony had the following to say on the matter: “After thorough evaluation SIE has decided not to participate in E3 2020. We have great respect for the ESA as an organization, but we do not feel the vision of E3 2020 is the right venue for what we are focused on this year.” It is worth noting that Sony also skipped E3 2019, citing a lack of substantial things to show at that time. That is definitely no the case this year though, so it seems like E3 may not factor into their plans going forward.
“We will build upon our global events strategy in 2020 by participating in hundreds of consumer events across the globe. Our focus is on making sure fans feel part of the PlayStation family and have access to play their favorite content.” Sony’s spokesperson continued. “We have a fantastic line up of titles coming to PlayStation 4, and with the upcoming launch of PlayStation 5, we are truly looking forward to a year of celebration with our fans.”
E3 has struggled the past couple years and has been subject to controversies like doxxing several journalists that attended the show. It will be interesting to see how the industry reacts to Sony bowing out of E3 2020 and if any other major companies will follow suit.
