Google Clarifies Features That Won’t Make Stadia’s Launch

With Google Stadia launching next week, Google clarifies what features will be missing when it launches.

In a Reddit AMA, Google’s Beri Lee and Andrey Doronichev detail what features will be missing during Google Stadia’s launch next week.

“Our approach to releasing features on Stadia is similar to how we run Google Search, YouTube, and other Google Services; gradual rollout and continuous improvement, based on your feedback,” says Doronichev via a write-up from GameSpot. “We always start with nailing the key user-journey and then proceed with releasing extra features. YouTube started with ‘watch video.’ For Stadia it’s ‘Play the Game on your biggest screen.’ New features will start popping as soon as one week after launch. I expect the first game with Stadia Connect to launch by the end of the year. The games that support Stadia Share and Crowd Play will be released next year. And of course, there are many more cool new platform features on the roadmap. We’re aiming to release new stuff weekly after 11/19.”

Among the missing features at launch will be that PC Chrome won’t support 4K, HDR, and 5.1 Surround sound. While users can enable 4K, HDR, and 5.1 Surround sound on Chromecast Ultra, the feature won’t launch on PC till 2020. For Chromecast Ultra to support Stadia, you’ll have to download a firmware update sometime after launch. Additionally, players that have the Stadia controller will have to play with the controller plugged in on PC, tablets, and phones. If you have a Chromecast Ultra, you can use Stadia wirelessly, but the Chromecast’s dongle needs to be plugged in.

Other missing launch features include the Buddy Pass for Founders which won’t launch till two weeks after launch, the achievement system, and family sharing which won’t release till early 2020. Additionally, Google clarifies that the first shipments for the Founder’s Edition will roll out on November 18 and they’ll ship in the order they received pre-orders. Recently, it’s also been announced that Google Stadia will launch with 12 games such as Assassin’s Creed Odyssey, Mortal Kombat 11, and Red Dead Redemption 2.

Google Stadia launches on November 19.

I mean a console with only 12 games launching is kinda disappointing, and they all are not even new. If people have a good internet connection it will be a good console, and the price of it is pretty cheap.

Wait holy crap this thing is actually coming out? I really thought they would've made the decision to cancel by this point. Can't wait to see these launch numbers!
