Modern Warfare’s Game Engine Took More Than 5 Years to Develop

3.7
The next installment in the long running shooter series, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare, is looking to do some different things with the series. One thing that’s also different is a new game engine that really catches the eyes. It looks pretty amazing. It also took a very long time to develop.

We often think and talk about game development in the scope of individual games, usually taking three years or so on average. Most people don’t think about the engine that runs these games, some of which can take equally as long as any single game. And, in Modern Warfare‘s case, even longer. As revealed by the game’s blog, it took just over five years to develop the engine. Not only that, an entirely new Polish studio was set up to assist in its development. You can read all about it here.

Of course, it makes sense that Activision would want to put that amount of time and resources into such an endeavor. Call of Duty is still one of the biggest franchises in the world, which each annual series almost always topping the sales charts, and this engine will most likely be used for many years to come. Hopefully, we’ll also get to see how it looks and runs in-game very soon.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare will release for PlayStation 4, Xbox One and PC.
