Kotaku is reporting that 2020's Call of Duty is now a Treyarch-led Call of Duty: Black Ops 5 as opposed to a new game by Raven Software and Sledgehammer Games.

If you were looking forward to Sledgehammer Games’ next Call of Duty in 2020, then you may be surprised by today’s shake up. While Sledgehammer Games and Raven Software were originally leading development on 2020’s Call of Duty title, Treyarch has now taken over as primary developer to create what will be Call of Duty: Black Ops 5.

According to Kotaku, Raven and Sledgehammer’s title was going to be set in the Cold War, but following this shift both studios will now being working as support studios with a focus on creating Black Ops 5’s single player campaign. Apparently, Raven Software was set to co-lead Sledgehammer Games’ next Call of Duty game but there was a ton of tension between the two studios. Details on these arguments were not specified in the initial report.

For those that don’t know, Call of Duty titles traditionally have three-year development periods. Treyarch made 2018’s Black Ops 4, Infinity Ward has a title coming later this year, and the aforementioned title was Sledgehammer Games’ next entry in the series. Even though this is no longer the case, Call of Duty’s yearly release schedule is not being impacted by this game, with Tryarch’s Black Ops 5 rumored to be a cross-gen game.

While 2020’s Call of Duty game is going through some massive shifts right now, Infinity Ward is set to release their title later this year, which is rumored to be Modern Warfare 4. That being said, no definitive information about the game has been announced.
