Ubisoft Introducing Online Pass This Year

4.5
Ubisoft will introduce the Uplay Passport this year which will come included with new Ubisoft titles. The online pass is said to be an exact copy of what other publishers are doing to combat the used games market. The pass will cost $9.99 and will unlock online multiplayer features for the game, or other additional content. Ubisoft is launching the program in the coming months, and will be first enacted in Driver: San Francisco.

Ubisoft is just the last in the now long line of publishers that have followed suit to EA's Project $10 Dollar. Currently Electronics Arts, THQ, Sony, Warner Bros., and now Ubisoft games feature this online pass for all pre-owned copies of games to have full functionality.

The short sighted implementation of the online pass may boost the bottom line for the current quarter, but in the long run I think what the corporate decision makers will find is that they are going to ultimately reach less people. Buying and selling used games has been a long running tradition in this industry. One that has afforded many gamers the opportunity and freedom to try new experiences that they wouldn't necesarily feel comfortable purchasing at full price. Taking this out of the game purchaser's arsenal can only have a negative affect on future sales.

EChondo I really don't care, I buy all of my games brand new every time. I hate going to Gamestop and I'm about to buy a game and they ask "Do you want it used?" like I'm a cheap poor person! I buy them BRAND NEW, just like anyone else should!

And don't come to me and say "Well, a lot of people can't afford to spend $60 on a brand new game." Then how can they afford a $100+ system hmmm?

Exactly my point, also I love seeing and smelling that new disc smell! Also I don't like rings on my disc(;

Wth are you on about? if you can get a game for nearly half the price just because it's used then you would do it unless you're a disc sniffer like yourself
i agree with you. you can get 2 games for the price of that. example. Brand new mw2. about 20 preowned mw2. only 5-10 Lol.

Seriously it doesnt matter. Hell it might even be cheaper to buy it used then buy the online pass. But if you want to get high of discs then be my guest.

You Sir.....Are An Idiot.
Just another way for games companies to make money..... Sad really considering that they make enough money from people buying the brand new game to make another game.

Both your logic and numbers are off.
Maybe they didn't buy the system maybe the parents did cause it was a gift. Plus your not a cheap poor person if you buy used games is more for the bargain, if you can save $5 on a game why not. GameStop will never take or sell a game that's not usable so your not getting ripped off. I mean the used game deal is there to help you not to tell people that your poor and cheap cause you want the cheaper on rather than the new one and plus in most cases you have to buy used games if the game is older. Its not like the game company gains any money if you buy the game new because how it works is game stop tells them they want 10,000 copies or MW3 (or what have you) and they pay for those copies on the spot, then sell them to get money back and your commit tells me that if you were buying a game and they only had a used game you wouldn't buy it. It makes no since to me that they are doing this pretty soon they will make all the games like this even if you buy a EA sports game from Games On Demand you still have to buy a online pass.
