Xbox Backwards Compatibility: Fable, Splinter Cell, & Ninja Gaiden 2

3.5
The Xbox Backwards Compatibility list just keeps growing. Today, Microsoft announced that a few more titles will join the fray. Fable, Fable 2, Splinter Cell Double Agent, Splinter Cell Conviction, Splinter Cell Blacklist, and Ninja Gaiden 2 will be coming to the Xbox One via backwards compatibility today.

These titles are Xbox One X enhanced and will have nine times the pixel count as their original Xbox 360 versions. And this is just from the power of the Xbox One X since the process utilizes the original code.

Ninja Gaiden 2 originally came out in 2008 on Xbox 360 and was met with positive reviews. An enhanced and less bloody version came out in 2009 for the PS3 and 2013 for the Vita. That Sigma version never hit the Xbox family of systems.

Fable 2 and Fable 3 are also coming to the Xbox One via backwards compatibility. They released in 2008 and 2010, respectively. The second game reviewed well but Fable 3 was not as well received. There is also a rumor that a new Fable game is in development and will come from PlayGround Games, the team behind the Forza Horizon series, so the timing of this could be sowing seeds for that future announcement.

Splinter Cell Double Agent was an early Xbox 360 game as it came out in 2006. Conviction revitalized the series in 2008 and Blacklist, the most recent entry, released in 2013 and was positively received. It was the last entry though as the series has been silent for the past six or so years.

Although this suite of Splinter Cell backwards compatibility titles could hint that we could be getting a new installment soon. Sam Fisher himself showed up in Ghost Recon Wildlands and his gear was in both Far Cry New Dawn and Assassin’s Creed Odyssey. Ex-Ubisoft employee Jade Raymond also hinted that a new Splinter Cell was in development. Ubisoft CEO Yves Guillemot even talked about why we haven’t seen a new Splinter Cell in quite some time, citing how tricky it was to please fans of the franchise.

Adding both Fable and Splinter Cell to the Xbox One Backwards Compatibility list doesn’t confirm that new titles are on the way, but the timing, given the rumors, is suspicious.
