Ex-Valve Employee Says Epic Games is Saving PC Gaming

3.7
A lot of discussions in the gaming community lately have revolved around Epic Games and the exclusives that have been and will be landing on their digital store. Most recently, it was revealed that the highly-anticipated Borderlands 3 will be exclusive to the Epic Games Store for six months, which caused an uproar among fans due to their belief that Epic's store is spyware. That said, a former Valve employee has touched on the situation. According to them, despite being around for nearly 16 years, "Steam was killing PC gaming," but Epic Games is saving it.

Recently, Epic Games founder Tim Sweeney commented on the allegations that their store is spyware, stating that this simply isn't true. This, of course, sparked a debate, which led to former Valve employee Richard Geldreich jumping in on the conversation. According to him, "Steam was killing PC gaming. It was a 30% tax on an entire industry. It was unsustainable."

He went on to say that we "have no idea how profitable Steam was for Valve. It was a virtual printing press. It distorted the entire company. Epic is fixing this for all gamers."

Naturally, some people are discrediting Geldreich and simply writing him off as a disgruntled employee. While this could very well be true, there's no denying that big changes are likely inbound for PC gaming as whole. With the battle between Steam and the Epic Games Store raging on, Microsoft doing everything they can to focus on the platform in regards to gaming, and more, it's only a matter of time before something big happens.

Personally I think anyone refusing to download the Epic loader is more stubborn than a donkey.

Maze I mean, steam just needs to help devs out more that's all tbh

That's not Steam's problem. Steam built their DRM and are allowing developers to advertise and distribute their game through their own platform. If the developers really hated it, they are free to try to distribute it without their DRM at anytime.

Saving it by forcing everything into one singular DRM? Yeah consoles are great because of exclusives. Epic Games is terrible for PC Gaming, I love Unreal Engine but the Epic Store is going to do what EA couldn't do with Origin.

Epic saving PC gaming by FORCING you to sign up to the Epic Launcher, FORCING you to play in their ecosystem if you want to buy the games they are making exclusive.

If Epic were saving PC gaming, they would be doing this without FORCING people to play on their platform but rather they choose to because it's the better system.

I'll leave the anti-Epic Games rant for now. There's nothing Epic is actually doing for the consumer.

epic is ruining pc gaming not saving it, if epic was really saving it they wouldnt be with china and hiding spyware in their client and paying devs to only publish on that horrible ui store front that is so hard to navigate, id rather console wars not be a thing on pc let the consoles keep that, and i rather the china government not take our personal banking info and credit card info via the spyware that epic launch is hiding, and i rather not have a launcher that random kids from fortnite adding me because some rando hacker hacked my account(this one is a real hacker as they got my email without me knowing same with all 5paypals luckly i dont have my cc or bank card on there) to play fortnite even though my password has been changed by me and i have two auth, yet someone keeps trying to access the account, and i rather not use a platform that allows random kids to log into your own account without your permission(alot of peoples epic account has been hacked by randoms because epic gave those kids our info).

so yeah how exactly are they saving pc gaming when what i listed is just a few major issues with the store front of epic china.

like if youre launching a game publish from the said game site let us download a launcher like eft and other games do including f2p games instead of using epic store garbage, im all for competition of store fronts but exclusive aka console wars isnt competition so people who say epic is real competition think again you can only get said game on there unless its division 2 then just use uplay

Steam is kinda like the monopoly of gaming on pc.
Lots of devs are trying to break free from platforms such as Escape from tarkov, star citizen, and dual universe. Theres lots more. Not the exact reason though. Steam elitists seem to ignore the fact that every website literally requests account creation, so the platform and launcher hate is just ignorance
