Nintendo Applies for New Trademarks Including “The Last Story” & “Wii"

Nintendo Co. Ltd (the Japanese arm of Nintendo) applied for new trademarks for “Wii,” “The Last Story,” and “Fossil Fighters” according to eagle-eyed reporting from publication Japanese Nintendo. Also worth mentioning that these are reportedly all new trademarks — not renewals of previously approved marks.

For the Wii trademark application, the classifications included ‘video game machine, ‘game machine controller,’ ‘video game program,’ ‘downloadable video game program,’ and ‘smartphone program.’

What is probably more intriguing is the inclusion of “The Last Story” and “Fossil Fighters.” For those unaware of these two titles, Fossil Fighters was basically a Pokémon-esque collecting RPG for the Nintendo DS and 3DS. The series never really picked up and after a lackluster performance, Nintendo didn’t do too much with the series after its second game in 2014.

The Last Story, however, was a JRPG for the Wii back in 2012. The game was developed by Mistwalker and AQ Interactive, with Nintendo publishing the game (alongside Xseed Games in North America). The game was c0-written and directed by Hironobu Sakaguchi, the original creator of Final Fantasy. Though this series received positive reception, the game never picked up after the Wii. It’ll be extremely interesting however if Nintendo were to make something of this IP, even if it’s just an HD Remake for the Switch.

With trademark applications, it’s really tough to know exactly what the company has planned with these titles — if they are planning on doing anything at all. This could possibly just be assets being covered, but we will have to see in the future if anything comes out of this. My fingers are still crossed for The Last Story 2. Though it is equally likely we may see some of these titles implemented in some way within Super Smash Bros. Ultimate.

In other Nintendo news, the Switch hit its best-selling sales period during Thanksgiving weekend, hitting $250 million earned during the Black Friday deals.
