Sea of Thieves Pre-orders Driven By Twitch Streams

Would be pirates had another chance to join the Sea of Thieves Beta over the weekend, and between that and the previous beta it’s clear that Rare has hit on a winning formula, even for streamers. And according to Rare Executive Producer Joe Neate, it seems that streamers are working for Rare too.

“We’ve seen from our beta that people watching other people play has driven them to come into the game.” Said Neate to Eurogamer, speaking to how the streams of the game have driven preorders for the Pirate title. “You start going, oh, what can I do in that game? You see a real conversion of people who want to then come in and try stuff.”

Rare’s upcoming shared world epic, Sea of Thieves managed to unseat titans like DOTA 2 and PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds on Twitch during the short beta runs, and that alone is super impressive. Microsoft and Rare have a lot of faith in the game, seeing as they’re launching their initiative to launch first party Xbox titles on their Game Pass subscription day and date with the retail release. KyloCrux Big part most games get out there is because of streamers, thats why developers pay them to do it now.


I don't think they pay streamers unless it's of course advertisement based. likely they don't do that either.

Mikey Sea of Thieves will be a big game for sure, and I for one can't wait to play it. Too bad I missed the beta.


My fear is that it's getting too much hype. Games that are over hyped tend to die very fast. Look at Titanfall, that game had massive hype for months before it's release, and it flopped.

Yeah that's normally how popular games work now, people Stream/make videos about them and they gain a lot more traction. I'm gonna go look at some beta gameplay now.

For sure with those higher viewed streamers. A simple ad on your stream will rank the charts for sure.

Saw Sea of Thieves on the top games list on Twitch while the beta was out, honestly made me want to get the game so Im not too surprised that the pre-sales totals went up.
