PS4 Pro Finally Getting System Supersampling With Firmware Update 5.50

4.1
The next major firmware update for the PS4 will be 5.50, which will be out sometime in early Spring- and as always, Sony has started beta testing for this update, to iron out any kinks it may have before it gets pushed to the larger PlayStation audience.

And now, details leaking from the beta seem to indicate exactly what we can expect from this update. Most of the new functionality is minor stuff, like the ability to clear all notifications, or to filter your game library (at last!), but the big addition here is that the update apparently adds system level supersampling to the PS4 Pro at last.

Supersampling, in case you didn’t know, is when a console renders an image at a higher resolution, and then downsamples it to a lower one- which means that even PS4 Pro owners without 4K TVs would be able to see higher quality images for Pro enhanced games.

This is a feature the Xbox One X already offers- the Pro has so far not had a native solution for this, only offering it on a per game basis. This new firmware update finally changes that- now we just wait for it to be available to everyone. Hopefully soon.

Craig Time to quit holding back the hardware that was designed apparently to do this anyway.

They say it's PC hardware, PC hardware does this out of the box.

Any hardware is pc hardware, just shoved into a shell and named a console. PS seems far to weak.

Biwwy Glad they are trying to keep up with Xbox.

The X is an amazing console.

the X is literally the best console on the market with its specs. waiting to see how PS can top it.

Agreed. X is amazing. My brother has one and I love it.

USAA I recently got hands on a PS4 Pro and a 4k TV. I'm unfamiliar with supersampling but I hope it adds some more performance to my graphics.

It most likely will. Hopefully because I have a Pro myself and a 4k TV, hoping to see some upgrades in performance. But it really doesnt matter since my 4k TV usually ups the graphics on my consoles automatically.

Got a 4K tv in the living room, sadly I don't have a PlayStation pro. Xbox are working on it to I believe!

Thank god! I've been on the wall about getting a 4k TV and this just made it easier for me. I've felt cheated having the Pro without one because that's all I hear that the Pro was good for.

Sony didn't anticipate how powerful the Xbox One X would be, now they're trying to keep up in the next-gen console game. As someone who recently bought their first PS4, I hope they're able to.
