Nintendo Switch, Xbox One X Will Be Big Holiday Sellers, Says GameStop

4.6
GameStop held its quarterly conference call for investors and analysts earlier today, and it’s already predicting a wild holiday selling season – especially when it comes to two particularly hot products.

Interim CEO Daniel DeMatteo first commented on the Nintendo Switch, and how the retailer’s results have been driven by “continued momentum” from Nintendo’s latest hardware. The company has already made note that the demand for the product won’t be dying down anytime soon, and expects the system to sell strong through the next few weeks leading into Christmas.

In addition, chief operating officer Tony Bartel followed up by saying that GameStop has a high attach rate of games and accessories when it comes to the Switch, and noted that demand will be stronger than supply, as it remains “one of the most sought-after gifts” for the holiday season.

What’s more, DeMatteo believes that the system is showing a different dynamic compared to other game hardware, as less people seem to be trading the Switch in than other systems in their first year of launch. Granted, the Switch wasn’t competing against a major system, like the PS4 and Xbox One were when they launched in 2013.

Bartel believes that we probably won’t see more used Switch systems come in for some time, and didn’t give a time frame as to when he would see them come in.

The Switch is just one part of the story, though, as the Xbox One X was another hot property the company discussed Barel explained that the new hardware from Microsoft has been “up to a very strong start” with a “market-leading” initial allocation, and that systems have been selling “as soon as they hit the shelves.” He expects demands to keep up over the holidays.

As for games, GameStop noted they were “very pleased” with Call of Duty: WWII the most, as it’s had a 64 percent higher selling rate than the previous year’s Infinite Warfare. On top of that, Destiny 2’s “strength” has been noteworthy as well, with a 5.4 percent increase in overall new software sales led by that particular sequel.
