Red Dead Redemption 2 trailer breakdown

4.4
The long-awaited second trailer for Red Dead Redemption 2 is finally here, and it’s brought our first real clues to the game’s story. Some of the biggest fan theories appear to have been proven true, though there are plenty more small details to suss out in the 90 seconds of new footage. We’ve pored over every frame to find out everything we could about the game.

This is the masked man we saw in the debut trailer and many of the screenshots, though we’re about to learn a lot more about him. That campsite is quite graphically impressive, too, especially if it’s one players will be able to build themselves out in the open world.

This trailer, which Sony has said is running on PlayStation 4 hardware, is full of many shots that look almost too good to be true.

Our mystery man is tracking someone, following the trail of smoke from a campfire. We’ll just take this moment to point out how good the grass and trees look up close. Rockstar has outdone itself.

This fellow appears to owe our protagonist some money, and he’s met with a rude awakening at his campsite. Will these sort of shakedowns play a role in gameplay, either as side missions or an endlessly generated event throughout the world? It would certainly fit the Rockstar formula. Then again, this could simply be a single moment in the story.

This is clearly just a cutscene of our hero stirring a pot, but it does lead us to wonder if there might be some sort of cooking feature in the game when you’re camped out. After all, the first Red Dead Redemption let you hunt for meat, and cooking was one of the best parts of The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild. It’s probably a stretch, but we’d love to see something similar in Red Dead Redemption 2.

This is a staggering vista, one with far more verticality and a deeper draw distance than anything in the last game. It’s clear that the mountainous regions of Red Dead Redemption 2 will be both taller and more open than what we’ve seen before. This would appear to be strong evidence for the leaks that said the map would be set to the east of Red Dead Redemption‘s. In fact, we’d bet this is the game’s take on the Rockies.

Alongside this shot, a voice provided lets us learn the name of the outlaw who appears to be our main character: Mr. Morgan. That’s Arthur Morgan, according to Rockstar, and he’s a member of the van der Linde gang. Though that group, also known as Dutch’s Gang, figured heavily into Red Dead Redemption, Morgan’s is not a face we’ve seen in the previous Red Dead games. This is more or less our first confirmation that we’re in a different time and place. Plus, it seems all but certain we won’t be playing as John Marston.

This town looks a little less full of life than the one we saw in the first trailer. Still, the level of detail is impressive. We can see a sign for a store that sells weapons and buys “all items,” as well as a drugstore. Sure seems like Red Dead Redemption 2 will once again have a full loot system and different merchants who specialize in different kinds of items.

No big clues here in terms of gameplay or story, but this shot of birds fleeing a church bell is gorgeous, and probably a sign of how alive the world will feel.

This lady is mourning someone at a graveyard. This could just be a cutscene, or it could be a sign of much richer behavior from NPCs. Maybe we’ll see people with actual routines throughout the world this time around.

Morgan appears to be implying he killed this guy’s father and might kill him, too. Certainly seems like our new main character doesn’t have the same heart of gold that Marston did. And speaking of Marston, doesn’t this guy look just a teensy bit like a younger, cleaner version of him? Nothing’s certain, but he does appear to have a similar chin, hair, and eyebrows. He’s much less grizzled, scruffy, and scarred, however, if that is indeed him.

A new logo. Looks like Rockstar has made the change to Roman numerals, at least for this graphic. Before, the title was always displayed as “Red Dead Redemption 2.”

This shot of the gang hiding out in the forest leads us to believe that the game might allow for a whole lot of ambushes, perhaps with an element of stealth.

Is Red Dead Redemption 2 going to have some full-blown train robberies? It sure looks like it.

This is our clearest look yet at Morgan. Sure, he might be a bad dude, but his Old West fashion game is on point.

This appears to be the continuation of the train robbery scene above. Looks like the gang has stopped the train by blocking the tracks with a wagon and is now roughing up the conductor. It’d be neat if moments like this could occur outside of missions, but the staging of this scene leads us to believe it’s just a part of the story, at least as shown here.

As the narration says, lawmen have been chasing the gang from all directions. And those bowler hats do look mighty familiar…

This shot of a snowy environment is accompanied by a voice over talking about the east, so this would definitely appear to be the game’s version of the Rocky Mountains. That snow looks much better than anything we saw in the first game.

This poor banker gets thrown through a door. We wonder if this is just a cutscene, or if it indicates we’ll be able to rough up civilians during gameplay. There are a few moments in the trailer that lead us to believe it may be the latter.

Either way, we’re definitely making this dude lead us to the vault. Looks like bank robberies are in, which could mean we’ll be seeing an Old West version of heists in multiplayer, as many have speculated.

This Native American man appears to be involved with Morgan and the rest of the gang, but he doesn’t appear to be a face we’ve seen before.

We’ll call this image part one in an ongoing series entitled “Why the hell are the horses in Red Dead Redemption 2 so horrifying to look at?” At the very least, this shot makes it clear that there will be a lot of diversity in breeds and appearance among the horses you’ll be able to ride.

It wouldn’t be a Rockstar game without a fight on top of a train, that’s for sure. Though very stylized, this also looks as though it might be melee combat as gameplay, rather than just a cutscene. We can’t imagine a big moment like this taking control out of players’ hands.

Red Dead Redemption let you equip or unequip bandanas to disguise your identity, with an effect on how other people in the world treated you. That feature looks like it will make a comeback in the sequel. We’d like to see Rockstar expand it even further.

This looks to be a mission set in a swamp, which further confirms the diversity of locales in the game and lends even more credence to the original leaked map.

Oh, hell yes! The bow and arrow, available in Red Dead Revolver but absent from Red Dead Redemption, is making a comeback. It should be a great way to go in quiet during encounters or while hunting.

This might be the most important shot in the entire trailer. Despite widespread rumors of delays, the game is still on track for a spring 2018 release—but we don’t have a firm date.

Maybe Rockstar will end up delaying the game again after all, but as of right now we can expect Red Dead Redemption 2 to arrive on Xbox One and PlayStation 4 by the end of May—though probably not before April.
