If you get a Red Dead Redemption 2 beta invite, beware

The Red Dead Redemption 2 open beta promotion currently making the rounds online is definitely fake and should be avoided by anyone that doesn’t want to be scammed.

A Twitter account for the fake open beta was recently created, but its only real purpose is to phish for gamers’ private information. It may not be the most fake looking account ever made, but the fact that it uses the Destiny 2 open beta typeface in its banner should have been a give-away, unless players are expecting space ships in Red Dead Redemption 2.

Other red flags found on the page include the source location of the page being Queens, New York, which is not the location of any Rockstar Games studio or office, as well as its lack of any official account description or link to legitimate Rockstar sources. This is not even mentioning the comically low effort put into the accompanying website, with its dysfunctional legal links and intelligible disclaimers. Additionally, Rockstar doesn’t do open betas for its games, and it’d be surprising for this trend to change with such little fanfare.

Moral of the story: If it seems too good to be true, triple check that it comes right from the source. Even if its goodness is totally believable, it is always important to be sure where your personal information is going.

A Red Dead Redemption 2 beta is understandably enticing, particularly because the game may be delayed even further than we thought. The game was previously pushed from fall 2017 to spring 2018, and we had hoped this could mean March. Unfortunately, publisher Take-Two Interactive recently confirmed that it wouldn’t be out until March 31st, 2018 at the earliest, meaning it will likely land in late April or May at the soonest.
