343 just made a huge announcement about Halo backward compatibility

343 Industries just made old-school Halo fans very happy with the announcement that Halo 3, Halo 3: ODST, Halo: CE Anniversary, and Halo 4 backward compatible on the Xbox One.

All four games will not only include the campaign and multiplayer, but they will support LAN play between multiple Xbox Ones or even between Xbox Ones and Xbox 360s. On top of that, 343 Industries is making every Xbox 360 Halo add-on map pack free for download in the Xbox Store.

As with most backward compatible games, players will be able to use their original game discs or purchase digital copies from the Xbox Store as soon as the game is released into the backward compatible program.

The announcement had been previously teased by Halo development director Frank O’Connor, who tweeted out a hint that the appearance of 343 Industries at RTX Austin 2017 would make it a “good week for Halo fans.” As it turns out, 343 Industries is hosting playable demos for Halo 3 and Halo 3: ODST on the Xbox One at RTX.

No release date has been given for the backward compatible titles, but expect them to arrive to the backward compatible program sometime this summer.

The timing couldn’t have been better for 343 Industries, who recently caught some flak from fans for its lack of Halo-related content at E3 2017. On top of that, fans on Twitter have been bugging O’Connor and other 343 Industries employees for a Halo 3 Anniversary release, so making Halo 3 a backward compatible title (and including all the map packs) seems like a good compromise.
