E3 2017: Sony “refused” to join Minecraft cross-play

4.8
During their E3 press conference yesterday, Microsoft announced that Minecraft will be supporting cross-platform play, unifying players on console, mobile, Windows 10 and VR builds of the game.

The Nintendo Switch was confirmed as one of the consoles, but there was nothing on the PS4. Earlier today, Jez Cordon from Windows Central tweeted the explanation for this. Sony didn’t want in.

“RE: cross platform Minecraft. Yes to Nintendo Switch, PlayStation refused.”

Expanding on the comment, he said, “Microsoft said it’s their hope for all modern versions to connect to each other. But I got separate info that Sony refused.”

Corden said he didn’t ask for comment as he doesn’t cover PlayStation, but “it’s confirmed that it won’t connect to Nintendo/Windows/Xbox versions of the game.”

Minecraft’s Aubrey Norris told GamesBeat, “We can’t speak for Sony, but as we said, we would love to have our PlayStation 4 community join our Minecraft unification plans.”

There’s plenty of speculation as to why Sony refused, and a number of comments on the cross-play feature, like this gem.

It's still stupid, would have loved to see this but sadly they're idiots if they don't do this.. more money really for someone who wants to play with their friends over on another device.

Pretty disappointed, doesn't really effect me due to not having a PlayStation or having friends on play station but we and all consoles developers have one interest which is gaming we should all get along and join up together don't see how it makes much difference for Sony refusing

Kinda silly that Sony didn't want in. Hopefully we the servers they have announced will be good enough to make up for it.

Its not like Minecraft is a deciding factor if someone is to get a Xbox or Playstation. Dont think it will hurt Sony that much.

Just makes Sony look bad, dunno why gaming the gaming industry has to act so childish, just make games for everyone.

-Silky I'm slightly confused to how this cross play will work, does this mean we will be able to join big time PC servers and take part in mini-games that require the PC plugins from the server host?

Its not cross play with the PC version only the Windows 10 Version. Most of the server sided stuff will be like pocket edition as that's where it started.

Doesn't Surprise me at all to be honest from sony. Nintendo and Microsoft have a good relationship but this will be a loss for sony in the long run.

The servers that are built on the Minecraft pocket edition files, yes. But not the java edition.
