Nintendo isn’t sharing when the Virtual Console is coming to Switch

4.3
Nintendo still isn’t saying whether it’ll bring a version of the Virtual Console to its newest console, the Switch, but it’s confirmed that the option is still on the table in spite of the console’s newly announced Classic Games Selection program.

As part of the big reveal of the Switch’s online service, which sports an impressive $20 per year price point, Nintendo confirmed it was overhauling its previously announced plans to offer subscribers one free game a month. Instead, the company is now offering what it calls the Classic Games Selection, a feature that allows subscribers access to a library of past Nintendo titles for free, at any time, with no restrictions.

In an interview with Famitsu, a Nintendo representative cleared up any potential confusion over the two systems, stating the Virtual Console and Classic Games Selection services are two separate entities, and Nintendo doesn’t consider one to be a replacement for the other. While most of the statements given in the interview don’t add any specifics on how the two will be differentiated, when it comes to a Virtual Console for the Switch, the rep states: “The sale schedule of VC in Nintendo Switch is undecided.”

The Japanese to English translation could mean an existing version of the Virtual Console will hit the Switch at a later date, or Nintendo is still undecided on whether or not a Virtual Console will be released at all. The remainder of the interview covers pricing, stating the online service subscription will be handled as an overall account and not tied to one specific Switch system, with more details to be announced at a later time.

Classic Games Selection will first offer NES titles like Super Mario Bros. 3, Balloon Fight, and Dr. Mario, with the possible addition of SNES titles down the road. The current Virtual Console is available on Wii, Wii U, and Nintendo 3DS and offers a wide selection of old NES, SNES, GameBoy, Nintendo 64, and GameCube titles at different prices to download and own.

Super Smash Bros Melee would be so fun to play again. Wish I still had my GameCube and all my games.
