In a recent interview with GamesTM magazine (via VG 24/7), O’Connor acknowledged that fans were disappointed by the lack of Master Chief in Halo 5. While Master Chief’s presence was emphasized in the game’s marketing and on the cover art, the super soldier didn’t appear in as many campaign missions as fans wanted.
“We very much realized that people wanted Master Chief’s story [in] Halo 5,” O’Connor said. “We definitely marketed in a way that we hoped was going to bring surprise, but for some fans and certainly fans of Master Chief, it was a huge disappointed because they wanted more Chief.”
He added that the number of requests for “more Chief” was “significant.”
“Doubling down on [the] Master Chief story and the amount of focus on him was probably the easiest learning from Halo 5,” O’Connor said. “That was a really simple thing to absorb and embrace.”
While O’Connor didn’t mention Halo 6 by name, he made it pretty clear that the future of the series will be tied to Master Chief.
“I think if anything he’s slightly more important now than he has ever been,” O’Connor concluded.
