Project Scorpio will cost over $700, according to one expert

Microsoft hasn’t shied away from telling fans that its upcoming 4K-centric Xbox One upgrade, codenamed Project Scorpio, won’t be cheap, but even those repeated warnings may have left us unprepared for the final price tag. According to one industry analyst, the cost will be upwards of $700 at launch and could possibly even approach $1000.

Lewis Ward, a research manager with technology market research firm IDC, recently told GamesIndustry.biz that the new console will need to cost at least that much unless Microsoft wants to endure a loss on every Scorpio it sells. “I estimate the basic hardware will cost around $650, so if Microsoft wants any kind of margin at all, Scorpio will have to retail for $700 or more,” he said.

Ward added that Microsoft could decide to go even higher with the cost, given that the system will be powerful enough to support both virtual reality and augmented reality outside of the box, in addition to 4K gaming and numerous other bells and whistles. The analyst noted that some current prebuilt, VR-ready hardware is on the market for $1000, though Microsoft may not go that high. “I think Scorpio will come in below that, but how much below is unknowable at this point,” he concluded.

If Ward’s prediction is correct, it could prove difficult for Project Scorpio to gain the traction many are expecting and Microsoft is no doubt hoping for. Still, even at such a high price, Scorpio still offers a clear advantage over everything else on the market, with the most powerful specs ever seen in a console. It’ll even make existing Xbox One and Xbox 360 games on backwards compatibility run better in significant ways, as well as improve the Xbox One’s screenshot and video capture features.

We still don’t know plenty about the Project Scorpio, including its real name, price, and exact release date, but we’ve got a good idea of when we’ll be getting that information. For now, all we know for certain is that Project Scorpio will be out in time for this holiday season.

lol. just because someone says they'll be buying it no matter the price does not mean they are a fanboy. I own a PS4, X1, and a PC.
I dont really care the price, I want the best product on the market. and if that means forking up 700 I will. Thats about how much I paid day 1 for the Xbox One will a game.
