Nintendo Switch Sells 80,000 in UK Opening Weekend

4.9
Today, retailers confirmed to GamesIndustry that the Nintendo Switch sold approximately 80,000 units in the UK during its opening weekend.

To put that number in perspective, that’s double the amount of Wii U’s that were sold during its opening weekend back in late 2013, where the Nintendo console racked up 40,000. However it’s not as high as some other Nintendo consoles, nor some of its current market competitors. The 3DS’ debut saw 113,000 units move, while Xbox One hit 150,000, and the PS4 hit 250,000.

It appears that the Switch has also at the very least exceeded Nintendo’s expectations for the region, as most major retails are sold out, meaning there wasn’t a substantial number of units dished out by Nintendo, or at least not enough to quench demand.

On the software side, the Switch seems to be doing alright as well. In the latest UK sales charts, provided by GfK Chart-Track, The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild was this week’s second-best selling game at retail, behind only Sony and Guerrilla Games’ Horizon: Zero Dawn, which notably had a much larger install base and a few more days on the market.

The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild is the third-biggest launch this year in the UK, trailing only Resident Evil 7 and Horizon: Zero Dawn. Further, it’s the third biggest launch for a Zelda title ever, behind only Wind Waker on GameCube and Twilight Princess on Wii. It is also the highest rated video game on Metacritic in nine years.

The Switch also saw strong debuts from some of its other games: 1-2-Switch came in at number 4, while Super Bomberman R came in at number 7.
