Microsoft 'surprised' at PS4 Pro's lack of 4K Blu-ray drive

4.8
Microsoft's senior Xbox director, Albert Pinello, has told TechRadar he finds Sony's decision not to include a 4K Blu-ray drive in its first 4K console, the PS4 Pro, "surprising".

Asked what he thought had driven Sony's decision to not include a physical drive, Pinello said: "I would say it's one of the more surprising decisions that they made, given their history with being on the forefront of media transitions like they have.

"So I don't know, I think it's a really great question, I'm not sure."

Instead of using a 4K Blu-ray drive, the PS4 Pro provides its 4K content via streaming, with an Ultra HD Netflix app already promised for the console.

By comparison, Microsoft has opted to include the new drive in its Xbox One S console, although it hasn't yet confirmed if the drive will make an appearance in its upcoming Project Scorpio.

Nick I don't ever use blue-ray at all, so I'm not even bothered.

Blue-ray isn't just used for movies though. The actual disc holds more space. That's why with the Xbox 360 each disc could only hold 7.5 gb of space and if a game was more then that we needed two disc. Xbox one has games that hold over 50gb so we need a disc that holds more space instead of having 10 different disc. I don't know much about the 4K blu-ray drive but it's a perk for everybody even if you don't watch blu-ray movies.

Maj What's the point in adding a feature virtually nobody is going to use? If people wanna watch Blu-Ray that bad then buy a fuc*ing blu-Ray player?!

Ok im gonna be nice about this. A Blu-Ray player isnt just meant for movie. it holds more data than a normal disc would also featuring crisper video. Do some research man. You should delete your comment and make a new one.

Slade_Wilson Honestly, who cares about a 4K Blu-ray drive. It's a gaming console lmao

You guys where not saying that when ps3 had blu-ray and xbox 360 did not. don't even try and play that card lmfao. This is starting to sound like people who try to defend iphone and it's lacking of features. Just admit the xbox got them on that area and move on.

FibreOp Netflix may have made a deal with them to not include the bluray so people would use Netflix. Who knows? :P

No way, they didn't use a drive to keep the price down.

To save what 20-35 bucks? I'm sure people rather the drive. Also correct me if i'm wrong but can't we already stream 4k on our xbox one s through netflix? If so that's nothing special by sony and even if we can't netflix does not get new stuff so it's still a bad choice.
