I've worked for a few places, the small ones I'll just refer to them as "company 1" "company 2" etc.
I started for company 1 when I turned 18, it was a union carpentry company that I traveled around the country a bit with. All in all I wasn't too happy there as they were a bare minimum company. Basically "good enough" was their motto lol, they did have good quality tools for us though and turning in my hours and daily logs were pretty easy as they had it all online. That company didn't have enough hours for me so I got kicked out of the apprenticeship and I found a new job. Company 2 was honestly the best job I ever had. It was super small, literally 9 of us worked there so it was super tight knit. We traveled all around the US, even Canada and Mexico refinishing fixtures for big companies like Microsoft or Nordstrom. They also had a shop that we would refinish or repair furniture for people too. Company 1 called me and said they had a job 30 mins from my house that would last about 3-4 months and they'd hire me on as a journeyman to avoid the apprenticeship. I talked to my boss at company 2 about it and he said go for it. Originally it was supposed to be just the 3-4 month gig and the reason I did it was because I went from $17/hr at company 2 to over $40/hr and benefits at company 1. Once that job ended I floated between the 2 companies for a little bit. One day while shopping at Target I noticed they were renovating (the same thing I did for company 1 the 2nd time) so i talked to the carpenter subcontractor who was Woods construction. They hired me on the spot since I had already done one of these before and I knew the ins and outs. My boss here was a total piece of work, always trying to literally fight other people, he'd make a mountain out of a molehill, just a real bad person lol. I told him after 2 months that I'd finish out the week for him to he could get another guy but I'm done. He told me to pack my bags and just head home so I did. The next day I get a call and he's asking for information and I just said I don't work for you, good luck figuring it out. After 5 weeks I got a call from the out of work list (union thing that finds us work if we want) and it was the same company that was hiring for the same job. I decided screw it, I'm bored, let's go for it. They didn't get much done in the 5 weeks that I was gone, and after he realized how much I crippled that job, that last couple months on that job was smooth sailing. Now a year or so after that I got a call from the general contractor who did that job and he asked if I could come lead another one of those jobs for him. All this time I've been working for company 3 pretty regularly (I'll write about them below), so I called my boss and asked how our work load looked for the next couple months. It was pretty scarce so I took the job for Skanska. They hired me on as a foreman that day and we got to work. The problem was, they didn't give me any drawings, I had no way to report my hours, no way to do my daily logs, no way to report my daily plans, etc. After 3 weeks the superintendent (the guy who hired me to lead this) had to leave for 2 weeks and had me run the entire job. I was pissed because now I have to make decisions for the electricians, concrete guys, plumbers, drywallers, order product, etc. etc. This is a lot more responsibility that I know nothing about as I'm just a carpenter. A week into that I get an E-mail that I wasn't supposed to get. This job was so far backwards it wasn't funny, nothing was ready, we didn't have parts we needed, etc. That guy always told me "oh it's the project engineers fault, she's new and too stupid" blah blah blah. Well back to this E-mail, he sent it to me and he meant to send it to her. He's blaming me for everything going bad so I went above him, I went to the project manager and basically said look, this is what he says about me, but then he tells me it's her fault, this is what's going on and I don't have anything I need to be successful, I'm out. I finished out the week, Friday comes and the PM comes out and basically fires him on the spot after 13 years, then he finished out the job as the SI, I fulfilled my obligation so I didn't want to work for Skanska anymore and I politely told him that I won't be on the job any longer. Now company 3, this was a job I got again on the out of work list but they kept us busy which is very unusual for finish carpenters. After a while things did slow down but he always lets us know what's going on and so far for the last 3 years it's been a great company to work for. There's a couple guys that aren't the great and they do give us the cheapest tools possible and they have no idea what technology is, but I bring my own tools in, most everyone is pretty laid back and easy going so it's been a great gig for me. |

I was a tech at multiple dealerships including NTB as well, then I went to being a service advisor to a Project Manager now! If you're in the Virginia or Maryland and need or know somebody that needs a roof repair / replacement, I can get it replaced for free through insurance!

My first job was at a bubble tea place when I was 16, it paid $12/hr. It was alright, just made drinks at the little stand. But they had cockroaches and refused to fix it due to the cost, so I left so quick LMAO
My second job was at a trampoline park as a membership sales person, it paid $13.68/hr + commissions ( anywhere from $100-$300 additional a paycheck ). I stayed with this company for 1.5 years Then, I was hired at a pizza restaurant to be an assistant manager at $16/hr. I stayed there for about 8 months before deciding I needed full time benefits, as I was 18 and no longer under parents support. Walmart came next, I was an apparel team lead for only 4 months. Worst job experience so far, in terms of how HR views employees with little to no regard. They would give you "points" (negative infraction) for going to the ER, and would ask you to work with covid symptoms.. they paid $20/hr, and I did get my Business Management & Leadership certificate through online university, that was cool. Now, I'm a shift supervisor with Starbucks making $22.54/hr + tips, with all the same benefits as Walmart, and then some. This job has been my most positive experience. |
