hey all

I made a mistake and bought PC3-10600R server ram

ddr3 4gb 420 pin ECC, Registered 1333 mhz

I was wondering if this will work in my desktop its

Xeon x5460 3.16ghz modified
Gigabyte GA-G41M-combo motherboard

I am hoping it will work just maybe a bit slower I can live with that

bought it by accident when I was looking to upgrade my ram didn't pay attention and it is already shipped so too late to cancel.

I don't actually know the answer. What an odd situation. The CPU supports DDR2 but the board supports DDR3. I would say it probably won't work though it will fit in the board, I just don't think it'll be recognised. The best thing to do in these situations is try it. You're not going to harm anything by doing so. Let us know the outcome. I'm interested!

hey thanks and will do

I know it will work with ddr3 ram as I have a ddr3 1333 2gb ram stick in it now and its working flawlessly even overclocked it too be fully 1333mhz but I am just upgrading the ram and what I am worried about is the ECC part of the ram. I just want it to work like normal ram and i'll be happy.

Believe it or not, they do exist, there's even boards out the that have DDR2 slots on 1 side and DDR3 on the other, imagine how much that ruins my day at work sometimes!! Look at this cluster f**k.

Anyways, back to it. If you are mixing DDR3 Registered modules with standard non-ECC memory, it will not work as you cannot mix the 2. It's either one or the other, however, as your motherboard doesn't support ECC modules at all, the modules simply will not register when installed.
