My grandma was on the computer and she clicked on a link and it locked everything on her computer, she couldn't mess with the volume, couldn't shut it off or anything. This number popped up telling her to cal it, so she did and she had to pay $221 to get it removed, she paid it and it started to "somewhat" work fine. She can't access the Microsoft homepage anymore and they had her turn off the Microsoft safety mode, the only thing they allowed her to do is log into her bank account to pay them until they got the money. I told her to call the bank and change everything out (just to be safe)

So what will be my best way to remove whatever she has on her computer without completely wiping it? I told her I'll stop by to check it out.

Hello,

First of all you shouldn't have paid the ransom. There's probably a chance they're going to re-lock her out at some point down the line. It's how the scam works.

It's likely due to extensions within Chrome. Remove all the extensions. Here's how to do it - youtu.be/vnHUeuBrABU

If this doesn't fix the issue, I would recommend reinstalling windows from scratch(deleting the old files).

Another way to deal with this but not optimal is going into the bios and erasing the drive. Most bios have an option to erase everything. If you do this you will also have to reinstall windows.
