my currency: US dollars
my budget:
5-6,000$ after purchasing display, borg cube pc case, keyboard/mouse

what i'll use the PC for:
Solidworks, gaming in 4k at max settings at best possible FPS, and eventually VR gaming because i plan to explore VR technology in the future.

display:
i'm getting this tv for a monitor: [Minimum post requirement for links]

yes i know monitors are better but i'm using this. i'll use product replacement plan to deal with any burn in issues. the money i'm spending on this is separate from my budget for my PC build/upgrades.

keyboard/mouse:
already have those.

OS: Plan on using windows 10 pro 64 bit, already have it on my current build

Over clocking: i want to build my pc in a way that i won't NEED to over lock anything, but also have the ability to overclock just incase i need to for whatever reason.

anything else you should know:
whatever GPU i get i plan to liquid cool it, and have my current liquid cooling system modified or replaced if necessary, because i want transparent pipes going to my CPU and GPU and want the liquid to glow green. the reasoning is just out of creative preference. i want to do that so that when i look inside my borg cube PC case, it'll look more like borg technology.

anything else you should know:
don't know what it's called but want to have a small 5inch'ish display connected to the pc case that'll display temp levels on CPU/GPU. need advice how to do this

anything else you should know:
once i get all the parts needed for my pc upgrade, i plan on taking it to a Microcenter to put it together and do the necessary cable management because they're way better at it then me.

...ok, now here's my post:

what should i upgrade on my PC to do CAD, VR, and Gaming on 4k hdmi 2.1?

I'm enrolling in engineering school october this year and i'm doing all my schooling online(Embry Riddle). I was going to start school in 2018 but decided to wait until 2020 to enroll for personal reasons. In 2018, I built a PC for the CAD program Solidworks(that i'll be learning in school) and the gaming function of my PC, i built it specifically to game in 1080p because i had no interest in 4k at the time due to not being able to afford an RTX 2080 at the time. I did this so that i could game while waiting to start school.

I'm in a position now where i have a better budget for gaming, and yes, i know that monitors will be better for gaming but i want to use a 55inch OLED LGC9 for a monitor.

i also did some digging and learned that i don't need to wait for the 3000 series GPUs to game in hdmi2.1 thanks to this video: [Minimum post requirement for links]

I also just purchased a new case for my PC because of how much of a star trek fan that i am: [Minimum post requirement for links]

I plan on moving all my parts from my current case into this Borg Cube that's 15inches x 15 x15

However, since i want to now game in 4k, and in hdr on an OLED, i know i'm going to have to upgrade some stuff.

So what exactly do i need to upgrade to right now, so that i can achieve my build goal until the 3080ti card comes out with an hdmi 2.1 port, so i don't need to use those adapters shown in the youtube video? I know i'll have to get a RTX 2080ti but there's like a TON of different RTX 2080ti's out there lol. Also, do i need DDR5 or DDR6 RAM sticks? does those RAM sticks even exist, and can my motherboard use them?

Oh and just to be clear these are the things i want to use my PC for once i've finished with upgrades:

1. Gaming in 4k with great FPS
2. CAD workstation(that means using 1 GPU, not multiple. Solidworks doesn't support multiple GPUs)
3. VR(because i plan to eventually explore VR gaming technology)

Here is my CURRENT gaming PC build:

You've already got a pretty substantial system. With new GPU's getting close to launch, and your CPU still being relatively high end, I'd just stick with your current system for now.

Most of the time I've seen this done, they just buy a small 5-7" panel from somewhere and hook it up as a secondary display, then just use hardware monitoring software to display whatever you fancy. Undoubtedly a pain in the ass, and it's going to be a custom job no matter how you go about it, so probably some trial and error to go through.

What's with the emphasis on HDMI 2.1? Why are you so certain you need it?

Buy the cheapest one you like the look of. I wouldn't recommend buying a 2080Ti though, especially now with Ampere being pretty damn close.

No.

when it comes to your question on "why HDMI 2.1" here's a video link that shows what i'm talking about, and where i got the info from. At 3:45 of the video he explains "why HDMI 2.1" and at 8:22 of the video, he explains the issue even further. the idea is to run at 4k with 120 hertz but u can't do that with 2.0 because not enough bandwidth(if i understand it correctly. [Minimum post requirement for links]

however i supposedly don't have to wait for a 3000 series GPU if i use the products shown in this video:
[Minimum post requirement for links]

on the other thing you mentioned, so I can keep my DDR4 RAM sticks then? that's great! oh and the other stuff you said makes a lot of sense.

so i guess what i'll do is just transfer all my hardware to the new borg cube case and not upgrade anything while i'm waiting on the 3000 series GPUs to come out, and when it does come out, get the 3080ti, do the water pipe thing i want to do and that's it? I won't need to upgrade my PSU when i get the new GPU?

also, is there any reason at all why i would need more RAM? I already feel like 32GB of dual channel RAM is a little overkill, which is why two of my RAM slots are still empty.

Yup, ignore me, didn't realise it was a 120Hz display.

Might as well just run @ 4k60Hz while using the GTX 1070, then yeah upgrade GPU when Big Navi and/or Ampere come out.

Yes

Shouldn't need to upgrade PSU, but we don't know how power efficient Ampere is, so can't say for sure yet. I'd be surprised if you'd need a PSU upgrade though.
Yeah, I'd just swap case just now and then swap GPU's out when you do the upgrade. Custom loop the GPU if you want, but you'll need to wait for the GPU's to release and then waterblocks will need to be made for them.

ok, thanks for the info! it's a huge relief that i don't have to upgrade as much as i thought i'd need to.
