The whole purpose of a HDD is mass storage. The essential purpose of now for SSDs is faster access to the storage.

Depending on what it is your buying in terms for SSDs you'll see marks in improvement, but go the cheap route and you may very well just be buying a smaller HDD with a bigger price tag. SSDs by their nature need a controller chip to access their data, and with that a cache to make it faster for more frequently used pieces. So the biggest thing you generally want to do is look into 500GB - 1TB SSDs WITH a CACHE. Granted even ones without do take awhile to begin to slow down, it's better to have longevity then it is to not.

You would be seeing a fairly major uptick in your booting performance, and loading of some games that I can say with certainty. Going from a HDD to an SSD can mark a boot up from minutes with a HDD to literally 1-5 seconds with an SSD.

When it comes to SSDs I've gone for an all SAMSUNG deal, mostly for the fact they're one of the major players for storage in general. But here's some options.

970 EVO
860 EVO
MX500
VPN 100
SU800
WD Blue 500
BarraCuda 120
