Shoutbox settings:
To access the Shoutbox settings you will see a tab very cleverly marked "Settings" to the right of the message bar where you type your message. Click on that to access settings. There is also a tab appropriately called "Smilies" to the LEFT of that that have exactly that; smilies.

Once you're in settings you can see all these lovely things to make the Shoutbox more to you liking, things like disabling notification sounds, etc.
