Okay so the title kind've really says it all. I've had my PC for a few years now and is never let me down but I'm going to take the plunge and purchase a 240hz monitor in the coming weeks. I'm torn between seeing if I can just get the job done with my PC, upgrade it, or buy a new one.

My current specs are:
Intel Core i7-4790 (not a K)
16GB Hyper-X Fury RAM DDR3
Nvidia GTX 970 4GB SC
& some shit Gigabyte MOBO I had Laying around. Nothing fancy.

It's done the job quite well and my main gaming will be CSGO and I play low resolution 1024x768 so FPS isn't too much of a big deal; is there any small investments I can make to boost my FPS to 300+ and make it work with the 240hz monitor, or should I just scrap it and build new? If anyone can give me some good advice I'd be willing to gift gold. Been a member here for years and you guys have always been the best second thought. Thanks in advance!

My first suggestion would be to not buy a 240Hz monitor. I'd spend less money on a higher resolution 144Hz display. It'll likely be better quality and easier to run anyway.

Then, as to whether you should build a new system or not- that's entirely up to you and your budget. GPU upgrade would be the first thing to do, obviously. An upgrade to a nice AM4 CPU wouldn't be a bad idea, but isn't entirely necessary.

We'd need to know your budget/currency(obviously) to be able to recommend any upgrades, and we'd need to know what case and PSU(make and model of both) you have for most recommendations we'd make- especially GPU.

Thanks for the fast reply! I should've specified that I already have a 144hz monitor and I'm just looking to future proof my setup. I have modern hardware already, it's just the PC that is lacking. And I'm not looking to get 500fps on Modern games, it's just really CSGO and older games that I'm interested in.

My PSU has plenty of room, it's a Corsair CX750M
But unfortunately my case was the one aspect I really couldn't care about , I'm not sure exactly what case it is, but any GPU should fit as I've got a EVGA GTX 970 SC In currently and that card is damn huge.

Money isn't really a problem. But i'd prefer to cut costs to get me some more FPS in CSGO until I take the plunge and upgrade to a £3k+ system In a few years time. Any advice would be greatly appreciated on which route to take , essentially all im looking for is either slight upgrades that would gain me 50fps, or just being told "nope, time to build new"

EDIT : wouldn't help to know what would be better to upgrade too, whether it's my CPU or GPU that is falling behind. I can't imagine CSGO is too GPU strenuous as I've got a 4gb GPU already, but I'm no expert; that's why I'm falling upon the help of you guys
