Akita began the light novel series in 1994 with illustrations by Yuuya Kusaka. The new anime is commemorating the series' 25th anniversary in 2019.

The novels spawned the 1998-1999 anime of the same name as well as the 1999-2000 anime Orphen: The Revenge. ADV Films released both anime in North America, and ADV Manga later published the novels' manga adaptation. The novels have over 10 million copies in print. J-Novel Club licensed the novels and is releasing them digitally. The company describes the story:

Orphen is a Sorcerer drop-out from the prestigious Tower of Fangs. His journey to save Azalie, a girl he looked up to like a sister, has brought him to the bustling city of Totokanta. Here they are reunited for the first time in five years. But what is the truth behind her monstrous transformation, and just what secrets lurk behind the Sword of Baldanders...?
Muraji launched a three part manga adaptation in 2016 under the titles Sorcerous Stabber Orphen Heed My Call, Beast! (Majutsushi Orphen Hagure Tabi: Wa ga Yobigoe ni Kotae yo, Kemono), Majutsushi Orphen Haguretabi - Wa ga Mei ni Shitagae Doll, and Majutsushi Orphen Haguretabi - Wa ga Mune de Nemure Brei (Sorcerous Stabber Orphen: The Ghost Sleeping on my Chest). Kadokawa published five total manga volumes for the series. Seven Seas Entertainment has licensed the first of the three manga.

Yu Yagami (Those Who Hunt Elves) launched a manga adaptation of Akita's Majutsushi Orphen: Mub-hen (Sorcerous Stabber Orphen: Reckless Arc) novels on the Nico Nico Seiga website last August.
