I can only see him going to three teams really

City
-Money
-Better than Mangala?

Chelsea
-Jose
-Terry coming towards the end (only another season or so), Cahill in poor form
-Considered ahead of Zouma

United
-Will be a starter

True - I'm being very optimistic. I've admired Varane since the day I saw him get his first 1st team appearence. Athletic, Quick, Tall, Strong - the perfect player for me, reminiscent of Ronaldo's physique etc..

However, if Arsenal can maintain Champo League again then theres always a chance - especially given Arsene's relationship with the French - and the fact we are in desperate need of a Mertesacker replacement

Here's hoping anyway!

But why would be join Arsenal over United/Chelsea/City? What benefits are there? At all?

In answer to both your queries, I'm not saying that he will - I'm saying i'm hoping because I rate him as a player and we need a CB.

But if we do entertain the argument that I was saying he would come to Arsenal over clubs in contention for the title; there could be numerous reasons.

Why does any big player join any club that isn't currently winning?

Could be that a player has supported/admired that club for a long time? e.g Falcao to United or Sanchez to Arsenal.

Could be that a player has always wanted to work with a certain manager? (Before everyone hypes up Jose, he is amazing in my view, but perhaps not all players see it that way)

In this case, Arsene Wenger is undoubtedly revered amongst French players just as much as Mourinho is revered by the rest of the world

Could be the players he could work beside?
Varane is a French CB and has played alongside Koscielney plenty of times - relationships are big in football - it is undoubtable that Ozil chose to join Arsenal partly because of Podolski and Mertesacker's influence.

Before everyone starts hurling abuse at me, I'm not saying any of this is true, I'm just drumming up examples of when big players don't necessarily go to the title winners, and trying to express that you shouldn't just automatically think players will go to your Chelseas and your Citys because theyre in contention for the title.

EDIT: and to be perfectly honest, I don't see Varane leaving Madrid, he gets playing time and seems pretty happy

I know you only used it as an example, but Mourinho has already come out with his admiration for Varane, talking about the great relationship they had when he was at Real

Yeah and fairplay in all honesty, in the case of Varane specifically, I could see him going to Chelsea, more so than Arsenal sadly

In that post Varane was just the medium I used to portray any big player

Not hating but i think alot of what you were saying is wrong.

Could be that a player has supported/admired that club for a long time? e.g Falcao to United or Sanchez to Arsenal.

I have seen no evidence that these 2 players have supoorted / admired the clubs for a long time , Falcoa uploaded on twitter "Hala madrid" and was exicted to join Real before he went to manchester united , There werent many other options considering he didnt want to be in monocoa and City and Chelsea both had alternatives.

Also Sanchez was only linked with Arsenal (And maybe liverpool?) its not as if these players had the greatest of places to choose from and they picked to go the route they did , They barely had a choice.

Could be that a player has always wanted to work with a certain manager? (Before everyone hypes up Jose, he is amazing in my view, but perhaps not all players see it that way)

This does play a part and i think the relationship a manager shares with his players is crucual , Look at the way Jose is loved and he and his players were crying after he left inter.

However its not something that makes a player move IMO , Its not a dealbreaker / dealmaker , Look at fabregas you would never expect them too to get along after they criticized each other , Bad relationships can be made good and vice versa.

Could be the players he could work beside?

Again did Ozil have much choice in coming to arsenal? , He said he didnt want to leave RM and he was only offered to arsenal...Again it makes a slight difference but the best players adapt to whoever they play , All the (Big) prem clubs have decent CBs options so its not as Varane would be left as the sole good CB anywhere he went (City - Kompany , Chelsea - Terry / Azpi as well in the defence) , Maybe other than United.

Before everyone starts hurling abuse at me, I'm not saying any of this is true, I'm just drumming up examples of when big players don't necessarily go to the title winners, and trying to express that you shouldn't just automatically think players will go to your Chelseas and your Citys because theyre in contention for the title.

I see where your coming from , A player wont automatically go for a club that is title contentions , But if your a club like city or chelsea , Its not as if the only catch is "Title contenders" , Using chelsea as an example we are not just "Title contenders" we are a young team (Especially beneficial when talking about Varane) , One of the best managers ,Amazing talent , A good plan + almost guaranteed success in the future.

The way you make it sound as if going to city or chelsea , The only benfit you get is the "Title contenders" and if you go to arsneal you can play alongside good players or with a good manager or whatever.

No offence but as i have mentioned Sanchez and Ozil didnt have the option to join clubs like RM,Chelsea/City and they were offered to clubs like liverpool and arsenal , Welbeck again was only offered to arsenal. If you look at the players we sign - Diego costa one of the most sought after STs in the world - Eden hazard - The most sought after young player when he was at lille (I swear every pl club wanted him).

Wouldn't let him go for nowhere near that price

Shurrle is underated, think he's a fantastic player, doubt chelsea want him going anywhere too soon.

He's awful for us. We could let him go, buy Reus, and still make a profit.

We'd be stupid to turn it down.
