Hey all

I just did a stress test on my X5460 cpu and it went up to 76 celcios in the first 5 minutes of the load

this was a maxed out stress test the pc was put under the highest possible stress

the thing is its freezing cold here in Australia its winter its about 12 celcios at the moment

I am concerned about summer is this too hot for my cpu?

it will likely never have to work at 100% performance as its an old retro pc build but still I don;t like temperatures like that, anything past 70c I get worried.

What cooler are you using for the CPU? Is the cooler running at full speed? If you have a high end cooler running at full speed, then maybe that temperature would be concerning.

Although, 76c really isn't that bad for an old Xeon. 70-80c range is perfectly fine, even in the 80's would be fine. I wouldn't even start being properly concerned until you're in the 90c range.

It's a $15 CPU. Stop worrying and let it burn.

the price of the cpu doesn't matter letting it burn kind of defies the point.

Same answer with more words:

This is a 120w TDP CPU and it wants a good cooler. I would not hesitate to run it at 80C. Get a better cooler if you want to overclock.

Max temps weren't stored on Core 2 CPUs, and some software uses 100C while others use 85C. 85C seems right for these.

Xeon x5460 is not a core 2 it doesn't even use a LGA 775 Socket unless its modified, its a server CPU and it can't do higher temperatures like the core 2 cpu's and it is designed too not run as hot but also designed too run for longer and that is why I asked in here,

It's the Xeon equivalent of the Yorkfield Core 2 Quad. It's the same silicon, so assume it can handle the same temps.

Yeh well I hope you're right

I built this computer for a retro gaming pc because I don't like modern games
so its important it works well, over heated cpu's don;t run as well obviously
