So here is where the story continues for this Jeep. I work at a large american road side assistance company, and run a light service truck. I was going to a call which was a jump start for a Mercedes, and when I got there, there were two cars in the garage the mercedes and an XJ sitting with stuff on it and filled in it. So I jokingly ask her, whats goin on with it... she said well I was thinking of donating it, I havent driven it in years because I dont like it in the snow. I take a quick glance being at work and the last registration for it was five years ago, as well as the tach had 125k on it. I give her my number like I do most cars people say they want to get rid of, thinking nothing of it. about a week later she calls wondering if I still wanted it, I said ofcourse and went over with a jump pack to see if I could get it running. She fired up instantly, couldnt Idle which I shrugged off and was just stoked it started. She asked how much I would offer and I said well I have no idea what it needs so I dont wanna offer something too low for you. She goes well throw a number and I told her 700 is all I would wanna offer right now. She says alright I will try to find the title and give you a call. Another week goes by with nothing and I get a call... she said she could not find the title and will have to get another and she wanted 800 I said deal straight off the back and said let me know when you get the title. another two weeks go by and I get a call from her saying that she couldnt get a title from NY, where I am from because the car was from new mexico.... another win. Did I mention this thing has only surface rust? Now I know why. Back when she first registered it in New york I guess they allowed her to register it with a note from New Mexico's DMV allowing it because it had a lien, so she never really got an official new york title... so she was wondering if I had any ideas and I just told her to try to call New mexico's DMV and see if she could get a title without a lien and thats all I really got for her. She appreciated it and then said she would try to figure it out. A month goes by I assumed she either didnt wanna deal with the hoops to jump through or couldnt get anywhere and gave up, understandably, then I get a call at about 10 PM saying she got the title and that it should be on its way and arrive that Friday but she is out of town until Sunday so I told her I could be there Monday. Come Monday she called and said she just came back from her trip so she was wondering if I could do Tuesday. Told her sure, hung up and realized I now dont have a trailer and need to drive this thing home... 20 minute drive in a area where back roads are not really a thing to get where I needed to go until about 5 minutes from my house. So we get there, it fires right up again... and I throw one plate on the back from my current 1999 Grand Cherokee and then kept that ones plate on the back... had my buddy follow me home in the red jeep. The jeep is a 5 speed so it was a trip I could not stall on a clutch I had no idea anything about and a jeep that could not idle for the life of it, we tried fitting the jump pack in it... and it could not so the trip began. no registration sticker and a bright blue inspection sticker from years ago. I luckily did not stall, but the trip also allowed me to discover it has Death Wobble so now I am going through the list of things to check. I have a good feeling it is the tires from sitting and need to be re balanced. Track bar didn't have play when I was checking... The only bad things I have found was the idle, death wobble and the trunk latch froze from not being used, fixed that in 5 minutes now to drain the fluids and do all the lovely refreshing. I got it to idle mint from about two minutes of cleaning the IAC so now it idles like a dream. If you read all this then now the pictures, I have a feeling most of you will not read it so here they are for you guys as well.

Requested TLDR
Found while working, older nice lady had to hunt down the title took over a month
jeep has 125k on it runs fantastic very little rust 800 dollars

A lot to read but I skimmed through it pretty well, but that Jeep is clean for the age! Hopefully ditching those tires will do the trick for you!

1996 ZJ Here
4.0L???

That thing is an absolute beauty, great condition for the story it has and you got it for dirt cheap.
Please keep us updated, I love seeing XJ pics. A black xj was the car I wanted when I was 16, so I'm quite jealous.

Edit: 10 mins later, I'm looking again, and I hate you.

Speaking of mudding here is my WJ in the mud.... exactly how you want the XJ, and are gonna see the XJ. it was a amazing first mudding event, took me an hour to grow the balls to do it. When I did made the event WAY better.
yeah it is a beautiful jeep, starts first try now... and just waiting on getting a lift kit... wanting to fix the death wobble before I take the WJ off the road. (V8 WJ for 1000 bucks)

I will keep posted on things getting done. Also it is the 4.0
