A couple of things to keep in mind if you want to gain followers and get big.

First make your stream presentable. You should have a good microphone, if your facecamming, make sure its high quality. Possibly a green screen, or just your back to the wall. Make sure you got streaming equipment (Elgato etc) no one wants to watch a vanilla stream with no music, notifications or overlays. It looks lazy and gives off the feeling that you aren't trying. Make sure you have social medias (IG/Twitter/Facebook/YouTube/Snapchat) you never know where people will find you.

Networking is the most important thing, make streaming friends in the community you're streaming in, and try not to game hop too much. The worst thing you can do is try and be a variety streamer at the start. You have to have a decent following to do things like that and be successful. So make sure the game you stream is a game you can play consistently. I've seen people pull in 6k-8k views and as soon as they play something else. they drop down to 200-300. Even ninja tried playing something else and he went from 100k to 20k.

All and all, don't make it a job. Make it a hobby, don't stream for 5-8 months and assume your going to blow up, and don't get discouraged. If you pull in 2-3 viewers a stream. It'll grow once you get your name out there and stand out. Try and have your twitch name in the corner of your overlay, so if you get a nice clip and it goes trending, it'll bring in more people, and you can upload highlights/funny moments to your youtube channel to bring in even more viewers.
