Ok so I currently don't have a laptop so I'm using my windows surface pro tablet. I am trying use windows 10 hotspot with the VPN connected. Yes the Xbox does connect the hotspot but when I look at IP in my Xbox setting it still has my local IP and not the vpn IP

I am a network programmer on IBM's Mainframe but i'm not very good with windows.

now your local IP, that would essentially be a NATed IP address on your personal LAN. nobody outside of your routers LAN will know that address. it's your PUBLIC address that will be seen by the outside world, that address is your router and everything in the same LAN will show the same PUBLIC IP address (unless it is on a VPN of course)

How is your windows surface pro tablet connected to the internet? doesn't it have a built in SIM or is it connected to your router?

Nope its connected to my router. Yeah on the tablet my wifi has been changed to the VPN address from Argentina but when I connect my Xbox it shows the my IP.

I'm just curious if that's normal to show up like that or is it suppose to show my VPN IP

I think you have to do it with a ethernet cable don't think it's possible through your phone or a tablet

I will have to back up what Couser said.
In a simple way of explaining how i believe it works.

The tablet will have one 'interface' for connecting to your router, this will also be the same interface that hosts the HotSpot

if you connect to a VPN, that is essentially another 'interface' using the same hardware however this will not be 'linked' up with the interface used for your hotspot.

on a PC/laptop, you would need to hardwire the console to the PC and use one of the 2 protocols to marry the connection together. i can't remember the names of them.

I'm curious about this, there must be a method of doing it! i've never used a surface pro so i don't know how much acces you get or what OS it runs
