I want to upgrade my amd 8320 (I know I know that CPU was not a good choice) but I'd like it to be under 250$ preferably

I'm hoping to use the pc for gaming. I have 8gb ram a Radeon 280x 800 or 1000w psu (not sure) a gigabyte motherboard and 1tb of storage as for the case I don't know what it is specifically but I do know it's a mid tower

One of your better bets, you can sell of the old parts, and make a little extra, get another 8GB stick of RAM, or if you have enough, just buy a 16GB set/better motherboard (full ATX rather then mATX, etc).

What games specifically are you looking for better performance in? A CPU upgrade won't necessarily improve your performance in games, especially with a $250 budget since that's R3 1200 money and the R3 1200 is more of a 'sidegrade' from an FX-8320 really, just with a better upgrade path and newer features.

A CPU upgrade should help then. A GPU upgrade would probably be more beneficial, but the 280x is still a pretty decent card. Though, you could upgrade to an RX 480/580 or 6GB GTX 1060, if you can find one in stock that's not still stupid overpriced.

R3 1200 should perform at the very least, on par with the FX-8320 in everything.
It sounds like you have a shitty quality PSU, so I'd be looking to replace that asap, just FYI. Also, add an SSD soon.
