I've always just done a small, tight knot favoring one side of the shoe then tucking it down the side so it doesn't look like I've tied them.

Sigh. There are different ways to tie a shoelace and he's asking about how to tie the knot (probably so the shoelace doesn't get stepped on or to avoid it being dragged across the floor), not how to tie his shoes. It really isn't difficult to comprehend.
