Death is too easy. They're child pedophiles and in prison, they'll get more than they deserve in prison. Most of the time children are seen as the only thing off limits in prisons. I've read countless prison stories about people who have just killed for their own pleasure, even if it was straight torture and it was pretty much "whatever" to others, but then as soon as someone brings a child into it, suddenly that person is the new target for prison.

I think that this is a very interesting issue, socially and psychologically. Research has suggested that pedophilia is neurological in nature, meaning that it is no more a person's choice than it is to be heterosexual, homosexual, bisexual, asexual, etc.

Of course the difference between a pedophile and a child molester is that only one of these two groups of people have acted on their urges, but the DSM doesn't consider pedophilia a mental disorder until someone acts on their urges. Which means that, for all intents and purposes, pedophilia isn't a mental disorder, it's a form of paraphilia, which are fantasies that border on the dangerous or extreme if they were ever acted upon.

I don't think the US and other countries are helping themselves socially when it comes to stopping pedophiles from becoming child molesters.
In many European countries, pedophiles can reach out to help groups confidentially to reduce the risk of them acting on their urges.
In the US, pedophiles risk ruining their lives if they decide to do this because therapists and physicians are required to report anyone who poses a threat to children and they are likely arrested if they are reported.

This means that many pedophiles in the US who would otherwise get help and become more able to cope with their urges are instead more likely to continue without help and give in to their urges at some point. The US is likely causing more - or increasing the chances - of what it is trying to prevent because of the methods it is employing to 'catch' these people who just want help.

Speaking more broadly here and putting many of the people in this particular news story aside - kidnapping children is a whole different ball game - I think pedophiles and child molesters need to be looked at as more of a psychological issue to be solved, rather than as common criminals. I think they should be protected in prison, or even placed straight into maximum security psychiatric hospitals rather than prisons.

If thievery was a neurological disorder and someone couldn't help but feel compelled to shop lift this is how we would treat them. Pedophilia is a taboo subject to speak of psychologically and I think that needs to change so we can start helping these people become good members of society, which the vast majority of pedophiles are able to be/become, rather than calling for their deaths or laughing when they are mutilated and killed in prison, and I don't say that to disparage anyone who has already commented on this topic.

I completely understand the feelings of horror and disgust that people have towards pedophiles and I feel the same for the ones showing particular cruelty in this news story, but over time and generally speaking I think a more compassionate approach is the only practical solution to this problem, aside from lining everyone up who admits to being a pedophile or is caught abusing children, and shooting them all.
