The laws you're talking about, is it illegal for bad reference out of spite on a person only? Example, if OP and his manager weren't on good terms and he gave his two week notice and left but his manager made it sound like he was the worst employee ever; would that be the only time it's illegal?

The way OP mentioned it, he just up and left without saying anything, apparently in the middle of a busy shift and states he was often thinking about killing himself and his employees - which I'm assuming he kept that part to himself. I would assume just walking out of your job without saying anything, during a busy shift is something a manager would be allowed to mention as a reference to another employer.

This is my thought on your "shitty" job story. Don't you have the manners and respect to go to the manager and say how you're feeling about work and you want to leave your job and if it comes to that stage - to say thank you for everything instead of leaving and think you're the one of the hardy's from WWE? Also if you need a reference for your new job where are you going to get one?

I felt the same in my old retail experiences when I was a teenager, although that was more so aimed at customers instead of staff.

Since customers are always dick heads.

At least you've moved on so good luck with future stuff!

That 'shitty' job you just walked out of could've been a dream job to someone else. Think yourself lucky you had a job. There's people out there that can't find any jobs and are struggling to support their families.

Also, at least have the decency to see your manger and explain to him while you're leaving instead of just walking out.

Don't burn your bridges, you might end up on your ass and have to beg for that job back.
