Was wondering if I should go ahead and build a gaming PC with a new intel CPU or do I continue to wait for Ryzen? Gaming benchmarks did not look to good, will it be just a driver issue or does it truely underpreform in terms of gaming??

It is still new and hasn't had any maturity time. To be fair with you the benchmarks were not entirely terrible.

It seems promising, first let AMD & it's board partners work out the early on issues that before considering it.

It's not fair comparison at this stage. Issues with the board and chip with early stages of new architecture don't allow for fair comparison. Give them some time then see what benchmarks are & then rethink your opinion

Depends on what you're using the system for. If you're just gaming, get an i5 or i7. R5 chips might be a better choice than i5's but we need to wait for them to come out before we know. R7 compared to i7 suck for gaming. For content creation and stuff like that, depending on the program being used, an R7 1700X could be a decent shout.

the computer 99% of the time will be used for gaming, other 1% may be used for occasional photoshop etc.

Intel then. I think the R5 vs i5 is where we'll see some real competition, unless the R5's really fall short in gaming.

Nothing has ever been as good as the hype, Kaby was a major hype for a refresh? and a better IPC. Ryzen is suitable for content creation, and keeps up and passes Intel on the multi core tasks at times. Intel has single core advantage, which is another reason Intel is much better for gaming. Like I said it hasn't even had its chance to mature. 13 Mentioned it, the R5 series seems promising, as the R7 did seem more along the line of multitasking/moderate workstation consumers.
