Hey!!

I would message Motivational since he knows a lot about weight training! Like I have said before in other posts, he has given me lots of great advice and I am sure he can help you out!!

What I would recommend to get started is some basic free weights like dumbbells and then I would also get a multi purpose bench so you can change it to different angles for different exercises! [ Register or Signin to view external links. ]

LSX wrote Want to start weight lifting but preferably at home. Do you think thats a good idea? I dont want to go to a gym just yet.

I want to buy some dumbells, excercise bench.

It depends what kind of equipment you have to train with, etc.. there is a lot of exercises that can build strength you can do with just you're body weight. But it's always good to have both, you want to train you're body in a specific order every week and watch how and what you eat. For example, Monday could be chest, Tuesday could be leg day, Wednesday could be biceps/triceps, Thursday back and shoulders, etc... it all really depends on the results you're personally looking for.. I would recommend buying a gym membership honestly, there's a lot of equipment and variety of exercises you can do. If you really want to see results at home you may have to spend some money on equipment first, or have a set regimen like p90x, programs like that mainly use dumbells and body weight. I wish you the best, and feel free to pm me if you have any questions.

You are better off getting a gym membership for about 40 dollars unless you have the money to get a good bit of equipment.

It really depends what you're trying to achieve. If you're just looking to build a good looking physique then weightlifting at home would be fine. If you want to get really strong though for sports then it would be a lot safer and effective to just get a gym membership. Otherwise you wont have anyone to spot you or tell you if your form is right which will prevent you from lifting heavier weights.

Working out at home is fine, just make sure that you have at-least a bench press and dumbbells and you should be good to go. As Nudies said, a multipurpose bench would be amazing, you could work chest, arms and shoulders using the multi purpose bench if you incorporate dumbbell shoulder press, dumbbell chest press, bicep curls and skullcrushers with it.

It's very difficult to train legs at home without a squat rack though, you're pretty much limited to body-weight exercises if you're training legs at home which isn't going to build much strength. You also can't do deadlifts at home which isn't good.

I'd still recommend getting a gym membership, if you've spent money on membership then you're more inclined to go because you've spent money on it. The majority of people at the gym don't care about your physique because they're too worried on their own. No matter how long you train at home, there's still going to be people bigger than you at the gym who will judge your physique. Hell, everybody judges each other's physiques when they see them no matter where they are. It's better joining the gym and being skinny than fat, just wear a hoodie and nobody will care.

If your diet is bad then there's not going to be much progress, irrelevant if you're training at the gym or at home. So yeah, get a good diet set out with a surplus of 300-500 calories and train at-least three to five days per week if possible and you'll make lots of progress.

Good luck anyway buddy, just make sure your diet is right and you'll gain size.

I think it's a good idea but the gym has extra machines to hit those certain areas you can't with just standard weights

I don't really like lifting at home, for one I work in a gym so I spend all day there already. But it's more motivating, when you're at home you can tell yourself, "just one more episode, then I'll workout." But at the gym you really have no other option but to workout. Also the gym is going to have such a bigger variety of equipment and weights to use, you're not going to be targeting every muscle that you want to just by working out at home.
