LMDesigns wrote Yeah mate I am working, done an apprenticeship straight out of school and have got a job permanently at the firm, which is in the IT sector. Which isn't paying bad for my age at the moment. I Also do bit's on the side that bring in some income.

Ony a few weeks ago I got told by my parents that when I turn 18 I'll be receiving a court award from an incident i had when I was a baby, which I don't wanna disclose the exact amount but it's a 6 figure total. Which has put thoughts in my head of maybe just buying a new car like the Merc to start off with and keep it for 3-4 years to get my money out of it.

The Fiesta Ecoboost are around 6-8k So going to £13k - £15k isn't a large jump is i'll be using it for 3-4 years. and My yearly salary can re-coupe that amount?

What d'you think?

Don't waste your money on it. Just put into a savings account and keep away from it. Save it for something more useful like buying a house or being able to live a lavish lifestyle when you're older with a family, you don't want to blow it on something that is going to be temporary, just my suggestion.

Once you buy the "new" car like the Merc, you're pretty much tied to it, you're going to have to be able to afford maintenance etc are you going to keep dipping into your savings for this because you cannot afford it from your main job? Think of it from that perspective buddy!

LMDesigns wrote Hi Guys,

So I've finally passed my test, and I've started to look at cars, I've managed to get quite a bit saved and I'm willing to spend £15,000 of it on the car itself.

I've been looking at BMW 1 series, Mercedes A-Class, Ford Zetec S Ecoboost.
VW Polo GTI. - But I'm still no sure on which direction to go in.

The thing that sucks if that as it's my first year of driving I'll have to get a black box installed to keep the insurance reasonable

So which cars would you recommend looking at?

Bare in mind any recommendations must be reasonable on insurance ( I'm 18 & First time driver )

You want to keep the insurance reasonable? You're going in the wrong direction.

You live in the UK insurance is going to be off the charts anyway. BMW 1 series is a no, a Merc is a no, a Polo GTI is a no.

£15,000 on a first car is too much, you're going to end up crashing your first car one way or another, well most new drivers do.

I went out and bought an 06 Clio 1.2 for my first and drove it for 6 months, yanno got used to the roads and it was only a cheap car so it wouldnt matter if you crash it. Then after that I went out and bought an 06 Clio 197.

Basically my tip to you is look for something cheap for the first couple of months so it wouldn't matter if you crashed it, something like a Corsa, Suzuki swift, 07 Fiests, not Mercs and BMW's.

Mummy and daddy are stupid letting you have a car like that.

Not a Corsa, please do NOT.

Unless you want to be looking like the typical 17yr old picking up 14yr old girls, do not.

You are wrong in so many ways lol.

When I first passed at 18, I was quoted less than 1K a year on a BMW 1 series. A-Class Mercedes aren't very expensive to insure for newer drivers now.

I've had 3 cars since passing 2 years ago, not a single bump or crash. You can grab a 1 Series BMW for less than £3K now so depends on which year you go for.

"Mummy and daddy are stupid letting you have a car like that." Why are they stupid? They aren't buying it?

If it's your first car, buy a used decent car. Don't go above a 1.4 litre or your insurance will be sky high in the UK.

When I was 18.. I payed 2600 a year for a bog standard 206. Biggest mistake and will always regret it. I live in london so the insurance will always be high here.

Get a polo but not the GTI model. Drive it for a while and get your no claims bonuses.. then you'll be good to go and get something much better.

I now drive a X3 3 litre here and pay around 1200 for insurance.

Insurance is a killer in uk man. Hate it.

Good luck mate

BMW's, Merc's etc are very expensive when it comes to fixing problems, parts are very expensive, they aren't very reliable cars, both rwd except the A class which puts insurance up even more, cost a lot to run etc. Nothing about what I am saying is wrong, it's an opinion upon which I am open to express.

Yes they are expensive cars to maintain but if you have the money to do so, then what's the difference between buying one now and buying one in 5 years except the insurance difference. But there isn't much difference between insuring a 1 series or A-class compared to say a 10 plate fiesta like mine.
