Hello All,
I wanted some advice on my PC problem. I have a Dell XPS One 2710 bought around 2013-2014 and spent + $2600 (I know it was a rookie mistake and I spent way too much). The motherboard doesnt work and Dell said none of its vendors carries this motherboard anymore and to just scrape this PC and buy a new one (motherboard alone online costs +$800). What I wanted to do was salvage the parts and build my first computer desktop since I spent soo much money on this All in One and I can imagine it must have some pretty good parts. I wanted to build a new gaming computer with the parts but I would like some advice on which motherboard type and size should I be looking at. I dont have a case size in mind as the build will rely on the parts to determine that. But any suggestions on the type and size of a new motherboard I should be looking at and case size? I want to do built my first PC and could use any and all the advise I can get. Can I save the touchscreen too?

Ideal I would love to save the CPU, ram sticks, hard drive, and dvd drive if at all possible and if you all think i can save other parts please let me know (wlan or tv card?)

Ps. This is list of the parts my All in One included-dont know if it helps and can I salvage the Microsoft key already installed there?:

-3rd gen Intel Core i7-3770S processor 3.10GHz with Turbo Bost 2.0 up
-8GB Dual Channel DDR3 SDRAm at 1600MHz-2 DIMMs
-nVidia GeForce Gt 640M 2GB DD R5
-2 TB-7200RPM, SATA 3.0 Gb/s, 16 MB Cache
-Windows 8, 64-bit
-8X CD/DVD burner (DVD+/-RW)
-Power Supply 235W

I'd just sell the parts you have left and use the money towards a new PC. A lot of that stuff is way outdated plus a 235 PSU wouldn't power a high end GPU these days. Good luck!

Is the RAM 204 pin SODIMM or 240 pin DIMMs? I think its 204 pin SODIMMs, in which case youd need to buy new RAM. You can re-use the CPU, but you need an LGA1155 motherboard, and they're a bitch to come by these days. You're going to need a new case and PSU. You can re-use your HDD, but you'll want to buy an SSD. You're also going to want to buy a GPU.

You can use an LGA1155 motherboard to fit your CPU socket. (Also lol at being told that motherboard costing $800, my X99 motherboard didn't even cost that much.) RAM might have to go due to size; however I have no clue how big the RAM is for that Dell, it might be smaller than regular RAM sticks so could be an issue. HDD can stay for sure. CD/DVD drive may be able to stay too if it can fit in a 5.25" optical drive bay.

PSU is out of there for sure, I honestly wouldn't get your hopes up to get much for that PSU 235w is abysmal. GPU can be sold but again, don't expect too much for it considering how old it is and due to prices of GPUs like the 1050TI, 1060 and RX480. As for your Windows Key, I believe pre-built PCs have it so the OS is built into the motherboard/BIOS; however someone can correct me if I'm wrong with that. If that's true, you can't sell your key at all as it's attached to a motherboard...that is dead.

Getting your PC for touchscreen, that's something I can't help you there. I've never owned a all in one desktop that was touchscreen, so I've never taken it apart to see how it works and how it's connected. I'm going to assume you may need to find a touchscreen kit that is compatible with the new monitor you buy.

I want to say there may be problems with trying to do this build. LGA 1151 motherboards are kind of scarce. A lot of them are out of stock when searching the only ones I'm really seeing are:

Asus P8H61-I R2.0 Mini ITX

or

MSI B75MA-P45

I would honestly advise just doing pretty much a whole new build at this point.

Thank you all, great advice. I'll try to get ahold of the lga motherboard and if not then a complete new build
