so while playing no matter what im doing, the controller will stop working. it doesnt disconnect. the light stays on but no buttons do anything. Then after this my connection goes out. only way to fix it is restarting my console. any ideas how i can fix this?

There could be something wrong with the connection of the controller itself.
How old is the controller? Do you slam it against anything when frustrated during games?

As Skates said it could be the connection from the controller to the Xbox. It could also be the battery. could be a lot of things. Contact Xbox support. And see what they have to say about the issue.
