What's Going Off?

The Pentagon has identified eight staging areas in Russia where large numbers of military forces appear to be preparing for incursions into Ukraine, according to U.S. defense officials.

As many as 40,000 Russian troops, including tanks, armored vehicles, and air force units, are now arrayed along Ukraines eastern border with Russia.

Additionally, large numbers of Russian military forces will conduct exercises in the coming days that Pentagon officials say could be used as cover for an attack on Ukraine.

Russian units will likely practice reinforcing the [Crimean] peninsula through such activities as amphibious landings and air defense exercises, and this may involve the change out of equipment and long convoys of military vehicles, one defense official said.

The military exercises are an ominous sign. Similar large-scale Russian exercises were conducted near Ukraine a month before Moscow carried out the covert military operation to take over the strategic Black Sea peninsula in March 2014.

Defense officials said it is not clear whether the massing of forces is saber rattling by Moscow designed to coerce Ukraine into accepting the takeover of Crimea or preparations for further conflict. Regardless of the reason, the warning time for Russian action has been greatly reduced by the staging of forces near Ukraine, a second defense official said.

Another troubling sign of possible Russian military action was the recent firing of Putins chief of staff, Sergei Ivanov, a former official of the KGB and FSB intelligence services. Ivanovs firing could be related to Putins desire not to have a powerful KGB/FSB general running the Kremlin when he is going to do something risky

Notable Point

The 24th of August is Ukraines Independence Day, which is when the Russians attacked in 2014

"He's not going into Ukraine, OK, just so you understand. He's not going to go into Ukraine, all right? You can mark it down. You can put it down. You can take it anywhere you want," -Don on Putin
(we can ignore the fact that the annexation of Crimea happened and this would still be relevant)

The anti-Russian propaganda is getting dull.

So they put troops on their border with an unstable nation who is currently in a civil war, and it's a potential invasion. Israel does this and it's called protecting their country....

The hypocrisy.

It's War Games from Russia. Ukraine would never be able to defend themselves but they can't just sit there and let Russia strole in.

By massing forces on the border, Russia are provoking the Ukranians into attempting to push the Russian Forces back, upon doing that Russia will see it as an act of aggression and war, it's a way of covering a potential invasion. It's simple mind and war games, not hypocrisy.

So with that logic, we're (NATO) the provoker. Since we put 10,000+ troops along Russia's border about a year ago, built hundreds of bases, and are constantly doing war games next to it as well. Don't forget the two dozen tanks on there too. But I'm guessing you'll say otherwise of course.
