Jeff Bezos' Net Worth in 2016 Beats Buffett's, Now He's Third-Richest

Jeff Bezos' net worth jumped $2.6 billion this week, reaching a record high of $66.5 billion after Amazon reported strong quarterly earnings on Thursday.

Bezos, 52, ended the day as the worlds third-richest person, surpassing investor Warren Buffett of Berkshire Hathaway, Forbes reported.

Amazon beat analyst estimates, posting a quarterly profit of $1.78 per share, compared with estimates of $1.11 per share.


The spike in Bezos' net-worth follows an even bigger increase after the first quarter, when his net worth rose by $6 billion following Amazons first quarter earnings report, Forbes said.

Bezos trails Spains Amancio Ortega, the founder of the clothing retailer Zara, and Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates on the list of the world's richest people. Ortega and Gates have a net worth of $73 billion and $89 billion, respectively, Fortune magazine reported.

On Thursday, Bezos' wealth had risen $5.4 billion for the year to $65.05 billion, after falling to $43 billion in February, Bloomberg reported. Thursday's rise put Bezos $32 million above Buffett on the Bloomberg Billionaires Index. The gap continued to increase after Thursday's market close.

Buffett has donated about $2.2 billion worth of stock this month to the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation.

Bezos owns about 18 percent of Amazon. The company's stock has risen about 50 percent since February, Reuters reported.

Many Twitter users reacted positively to the shift in the ranking of world's richest people.

Damn, I wonder if it will stay that way. I think Bill Gates will still be the richest for a while.. Bill Gates would be the wealthiest by far if he never donated a large amount of his money to charity (20+ billion) .. great guy.

What the ****?! How can he live life with that sort of money. Doesn't he get depressed over the amount of money you earn. If that was me I wouldn't know what to do with life. Couple million will do me fine. Also thinking what to spend it on... Fair play to him. I want to know who's the first richiest person alive today? That would be interesting to know. Bill gates I think will always be in his position, if someone will take over that would be a surprise.

Bill Gates was #2 a few years back but regained his position, like I said though if he never donated to charity his net worth would be well over 100 billion.

Bill Gates is the most humble guy I swear, just as a comment to earlier comments when his name came up. There was an interview with him where he was told that people are saying he gives the most, but he turned it around, and said he didn't give much, because in terms of how much he has, he didn't lose much. And he said that some people have given everything to others who needed it, and that those people are the real hero's

Yea Halo is probably right on this. Bill probably would have had so much money if he saved his earnings and invested more, but instead he donations billions to Africa and to his foundations.
